Ive never seen that interpretation before. I have always just assumed that it was the Romans making sure, i have heard that if they failed in an execution such as this they themselves were put to death.

Just found in the Gospel accoring to St. John however who says it happened to fulfill scripture (john 19:33-36). I’d take that over my interpretation! 👍

There is no contradiction between human motives and God’s foresight. Surely the Roman soldier did not think to himself “Gee I’d better stab this guy or Hebrew scripture will not be fulfilled.” Anyway they already peirced his hands and feet, unless the Hebrew word for pierce had a more precise meaning as in English.

If they wanted to make certain he was dead, that’s a good motive, better than leaving him to die slowly in his own tomb, but the Gospel passage seems to be clear that they did not break his legs precisely because they knew he was dead…??

agree on your first point; should have thought of that one haha!

So they break the legs of the others so they are not still up there on the Sabbath, but not Christ as he is already dead. But to make sure they Stab him with the lance. Thats the only reasoning i can see behind it.

I know that has some followers; in “The Passion of the Christ” thats the reason given as to why they pierce his side. I guess there was no need to break his legs as he was dead and looked as much to them but just for assurance they used the spear…

Lincoln7 is correct. They pierced Jesus side, at least in part, to fulfill prophecy.

Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, While we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins, Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; But the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all. Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; Like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth. (Isaiah 53:4-7)
It’s worth reading the whole chapter. I believe the prophecy may be elsewhere in the Old Teastament as well.

The prophecy about the piercing itself can be found in Zechariah 12; 10-11. Also see 13; 1.

Also, King David prophesied in a psalm about the death of the messiah: “They have pierced my hands and feet; I can count all my bones.”
