Hi all. I hope this is the right place to post this. My two future sisters-in-law are into this “self-help” scam called the Landmark Forum. It’s a series of classes you take with others in which you are basically told that everything you thought was true and the person you thought you were are actually artificial constructs that you built for yourself as a reaction to not getting your way in life, and are ultimately self-defeating and an impediment to true freedom. Conveniently, once you have completely lost any sense of yourself and the real world around you, you would be much more likely to keep throwing money at these people in order to stay in this state of oblivion.

I need some help here on what to say to these women, whom I love like sisters, but who have always been lost in my eyes. Neither of them are religious in any traditional sense (big shocker that), the older one has been giving this Landmark place money for years, and the younger one now wants to try giving her money to these people so they can tell her that she is not who she is.

You can tell them that the Landmark Forum works for a lot of people and that it is a valuable tool that can benefit anyone.

I found it to be very helpful.

It actually helped strengthen my religious beliefs. As for the monetary aspects, most of the courses are relatively inexpensive. I’ve known a fair amount of people who have taken the course and very few have had negative experiences with it. The ones that did, simply left (and got their money back).

If they are taking the course or are determined to take the course, it might be more helpful not to refrain from actively criticizing them for it in the long run.
 
I’ve seen nuns take the course, orthodox Jews, muslims. There is nothing subversive in it and it’s goal is to help people make the world a better place through actions. It is really nothing to worry about.

You’re absolutely right. There would be no good reason to criticize those who have gone through it or are going through it. My point is to help, not hurt. As far as religious going through the program, I don’t see how that bears on whether it is a good thing or not so good. All I had to do was read the Landmark website itself to see that it is based in subjectivity and nihilism. Probably not the best route to Christ.

Three roommates of mine went through it. They ended up being pressured into doing more and more recruiting, and taking more expensive classes. It started to control their lives. They had little time for anything. They became less obsrvant as far as I could see and a little pushier in general, but otherwise I had trouble noticing much change. What disturbed me was that they bgan resembling one another more. Their sweet and quirky selves seemed lost in a gladhanding world of salesmanship even when relaxing in front of the TV. (Which meant recruiting during commercials at least, anyway). I don’t recommend it or any such class.

Applying their own reasoning to themselves, everything the Landmark Forum says is a false construct they built for themselves, yadada, yadada, hubba hubba hubba, woo woo woo…
 
It’s like anything else geared toward making one a better person. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Some courses more than others, this is true. Not something I liked. But I basically ignored that aspect and still found value.
