Fr. McBrien:

“The challenge to offer a specific, compelling argument for the Latin Mass has just been made more difficult…”

Here is the article posted on Fr. Z’s blog:

wdtprs.com/blog/2007/10/bp-wcela-in-american-magazine-on-the-latin-mass/
Thank you, Brennan. The “article” you cite aptly supports McBrien’s claim:Again, while no one should question their freedom of speech, not one of them, to my knowledge, has presented a credible justification for their preference. A few substitute ridicule for reasoning.(emphasis added)I may grant you that while the blog venue tends to bring bring out baser prose, Fr. Z’s post is so chock full of immature, whiney, snarky condescension that it hardly befits a good Catholic, let alone clergy. Is this the tenor of argument against Wcela &/or McBrien? If so, you make their case better than your own.

Actually, what you need to do is not abandon so-called “Novus Ordo” parishes.
It is not so much the Novus Ordo but the culture that it tries to adhere to. The reason for promulgating the Novus Ordo was to allow for multiple cultures within it. The Novus Ordo is neither reverent or irreverent per se. It is whatever the local community wants it to be. Some of these communities even have multiple cultures within themselves, such as hispanics, Polish, Vietnamese, etc. Some are into dancing, some are into clowning, etc. Unfortunately the TLM has its own culture and just can’t fit it unless it’s compatible with the local community’s. It’s not a matter of abandoning anything.

And I think it will take a while to gauge a real level of interest. Those who might show no interest may never have been to a TLM, or are making a quite hasty judgment. Let them attend a TLM with Gregorian chant for a bit (or at least have an opportunity) and then maybe we can see where the interest lies.
Exactly. The Church has been without the Tridentine Mass for 40 years. My whole generation, in the main, has had no experience of the Tridentine Mass.

Things move slowly in the Church. We will not see a sudden dramatic increase in the number of people who attend the Tridentine Mass. However, I believe that this Mass will grow in popularity as time goes by.

In order for this to happen we need to get the word out. We need to promote this Mass and educate people, especially the young ones. This is what I intend to do. I want to do all that I can to spread devotion to the Tridentine Mass and I pray for the day when there will be a Tridentine Mass celebrated in most parishes in the world.

I love the Mass of Paul VI and I want this Mass to be celebrated reverently and be well attended but I want more people to attend the Tridentine Mass so that we can preserve it for the future.

There are more and more men joining traditional seminaries. The number of Priests who are able to celebrate the Tridentine Mass will grow in the future.

Personally, I think there is a change of attitude within the Church already. Take this as an example, my Church has just reinstalled stained glass windows that were removed after Vatican II; they were hidden away in a dusty cellar for 40 years. We blessed these ancient stained glass windows today before the Mass. It was brilliant and lovely to see them restored to their rightful place.

We truly have a great Pope and I pray that his papacy be long and fruitful.

We just got home a little while ago from the TLM here in town.

We had two chiors today. The regular Adult choir in the balcony and the “children’s extemporanious screaching choir” in the back rows. 😃

Just kidding folks. There were several rather cranky little ones in Church this morning, but it is such a blessing to know that little ones are being exposed to the TLM. Watching them go up with there parents, kneeling at the communion rail event hough they can’t see over it just warms my heart.

I cannot adequately describe how wonderful it feels to leave the Church after mass either. It feels like floating. I too look forward to the day when most parishes have at least one TLM mass every week.

I can only say that for those who haven’t experienced it, give it a try. You won’t be sorry.

James
