The Legion that enters the swines

Sometimes there’s more than meets the eyes…

Swine are not able to reason as humans; so it could well be that the possession of the evil spirits caused them such terrible fright that they ran off the cliff in blind fear.

Here’s what’s more confounding… the people were more concerned with Jesus’ Power and the loss of their livelihood than with the restoration of the two men who were possessed by the demons.

Instead of thanking God that Jesus was in their midst they requested that Jesus leave their land, isn’t that the way man has always treated God?

PS. We also miss the engagement: ‘are you here to torment us before time?’

It’s interesting the demons pleaded with Jesus; Jesus complied with their request to enter the swine and it seemed they immediately took advantage of the opportunity to defame Jesus by drowning the swine. For as soon as the occupants of the city found out what happened, they were not happy. They urged Jesus to leave. Devils will be devils to the end

Another example of Jesus as “the fall and rise of many men and a sign of contradiction” for the sake of the salvation of men.

  1. Swine are considered unclean animals.
  2. Because Jesus has swept the houses clean, that is, exorcised the possessed men, the demons thought that by possessing the unclean, they can delay judgment.
  3. The swine drowning means that no one can escape God’s judgment.

I think the pigs and their single minded rampage over the cliff made visible the exorcising that happened to them. I don’t know if this matters or why I’m curious about it but, did each demon get their own pig or did some have to share? Was each pig possessed by all of the demons?

As you know, Jesus allows the legion of evil spirits to enter the herd of swines. But why did the swines ran down the hill to die? Might as well request Jesus to just allow them to leave the body of the possessed man right?
The demons in the man requiring him to be bound in chains, then cause the same kind of problem in the swine.
Luke 8
29 For he commanded the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For many times it seized him, and he was bound with chains, and kept in fetters; and breaking the bonds, he was driven by the devil into the deserts. 30 And Jesus asked him, saying: What is thy name? But he said: Legion; because many devils were entered into him. 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. 32 And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain; and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. 33 The devils therefore went out of the man, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were stifled.

I would argue that it wasn’t the same kind of problem. The possessed man wasn’t compelled to run into the lake and drown himself… I found this though;
Isaiah 66 😮

For by fire will the Lord execute judgment,
and by his sword, on all flesh;
and those slain by the Lord shall be many.

17 Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following the one in the center, eating the flesh of pigs, vermin, and rodents, shall come to an end together, says the Lord.

18 For I know[e] their works and their thoughts, and I am[f] coming to gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. From them I will send survivors to the nations,
Maybe the the guy who was free’d by Jesus is a survivor Jesus sent. Maybe why Jesus didn’t let him stay with Him?

Isaiah 65

The Righteousness of God’s Judgment
65 I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask,
to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here I am, here I am,”
to a nation that did not call on my name.
2 I held out my hands all day long
to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
following their own devices;
3 a people who provoke me
to my face continually,
sacrificing in gardens
and offering incense on bricks;
4 who sit inside tombs,
and spend the night in secret places;
who eat swine’s flesh,
with broth of abominable things in their vessels;
This kind of describes the people in that territory

To once again show that God said to His people not to eat pork!
God does not like pork ok? So He wasted that meat so people won’t eat it!
Voila!!! 😁

If hell is the home of demons, one thing we can learn is how awful it must be there if demons prefer dwelling in swine to going “home”.

This Roman Legion was “centrally involved” in the Roman assault on Israel thtat resulted in the destruction of the Temple in 70 Ad. Its symbols were “the bull…a ship…the god Neptune… and a boar.”

If you believe that the gospel of Mark was written around that time, it is possible that these symbols influenced the telling of the story. If you believe the story was essentially set in stone during the lifetime of Jesus, it is possible this was a prophecy of events to come in Israel.

Haydock Commentary on Mark 5
Ver. 13. Jesus Christ permitted the devil to destroy these swine, that from their destruction, the men of that country might take the alarm, and be converted. Ven. Bede.

Ok, I don’t think the man was suffering that problem because the demons weren’t being cast out until Jesus arrived.

What problem? The scripture says that it was the devils in the man and the devils in the swine
33 The devils therefore went out of the man, and entered into the swine; …

…or we can read into the experience what we think we know or believe to be the “right” connection.

I once heard it explained that they wanted to enter the herd of swine, because a herd of swine can do a tremendous amount of damage. Modern adult swine generally weigh between 300-700 lbs, so if you can imagine a herd full of 300-700 lb animals, that’s a lot of damage!

However, Jesus turned the tables on them— even though he granted their request in allowing them to possess the herd, he did not allow them to do what they wanted with the herd. Instead of causing destruction to others, the herd destroyed itself.
