The Lessons of Lent

There are too many negative threads right now! So in the interest of taking our discussions in a different direction, I pose a question:

What did you learn during Lent or Holy Week, and how will it affect you in 2010?

This year my family went on a much-needed vacation. My prayers through many lenten seasons have been to bring reconcilliation to my family of origin. God answered those prayers in a powerful way this year!

We drove from Minnesota to California and back. Packed the dirt bikes in a trailer and hauled it behind us.

I got to visit with my Mom, My two sisters, my brothers-in-law and met 4 of my nephews that I have never seen. They, in turn, got to meet two of my daughters they had yet to meet.

I also got to meet my new “grandaughter” who’s Father is like a son to me.

Through a series of events I’ve posted elsewhere, we were able to attend Easter morning Mass at a beautiful church in Columbus, Nebraska.

AND- I got to listen to Father Corapi’s cds a great deal of the drive.

Lent was beautiful, as always. God is amazing, as always. I am overflowing with love and gratitude for all He has done for me, and for all of us this season.

I’ve learned that I had become way too addicted to trashy TV and recreational internet. Not to mention food! Which cut down the time I spent praying, listening to/reading useful stuff related to the faith or my profession (or at least stuff that was educational in a more general way).

I’ve also learned that I can successfully spend at 2-3 days at a time without ANY TV or recreational internet, and fasting moderately, and in fact feel much better for doing so by the end. I also rediscovered the power of Eucharistic Adoration and daily Mass.

And I intend to continue these practices in the future, God willing.

Wow thanks for sharing! These are great. I think I learned forgiveness more than anything else. Christ’s great forgiveness of those who deserted him, swore they didn’t know him, and even killed him, was somehow more real to me this year. There are people in my past whom I need to forgive, and I never even realized it until now. Not that I can forgive as our Lord did. Rather, I cannot proclaim a gospel of repentance and forgiveness of sins for *all those other people * while holding on to old hurts and grudges in my own life. Lent and Holy Week showed me how petty these grudges really are. Thanks be to God.
