I just finished watching a movie, and bought and read the book on this woman Edith Stein. She was a highly intelligent philosopher and a good Jewish woman. After much research, she converted to The Catholic faith, became a Catholic nun, died in Auschwitz and was made a Saint. Her Saint’s name was St. Benedicta. I also know of a woman I read who was also Jewish, was upset that her parents never even told her about The New Testament, therefore she too converted to The Catholic faith.
If we as Christians read The Old Testament with The New Testament, why is it that Jewish households don’t even allow their children to read The New Testament? Perhaps they are afraid what would happen if they did.

probably for the same reason we do not expose young children to the qu’ran. We do not believe it, and it would simply be confusing to children. I do not know of any Jewish family that would deny their adult children the right to read what they like.

p.s.- It is not fear that they will find something, it is desire for them to stay on the right path

Never mentioned adults, but children.

I wrote about children. Would you let your Children read the qu’ran, or even “Essays on Satanism”? Are you afraid they will find something, or are you afraid they will be confused because they do not have the capacity to discern everything properly.

It is not that they are scared, it is that they are prudent.

For Jews, it would be a form of idolatry. Do you have children? How many times have you taken them to a Jewish service or read them the commentary from Rashi? How many Christians read the Ethics of the Fathers? When was the last time you purchased a Koran for your children or neices and nephews?

Let’s be reasonable. To say Jews are afraid to let their children read the NT is nonsense.

I went to Birkenau, to see the place where Edith Stein died.

You are right, a remarkable pilgrimage journey, ending in such triumph.

I believe that we need not lower the tone by discussing who is reading what!!!. Edith Stein knew both, and from the beginning of her Faith journey, she had the complete history of God’s people embedded and living in her.

A remarkable woman, a remarkable life, a remarkable Jewess, and a remarkable Catholic.

God Bless you & Shalom.

I think you are a little off track. If my parents were withholding the truth and I didn’t know this, I would of at least wanted them to give me a part of The Bible that has never been seen so as to form my own opinion. There are two parts to one book. Let’s look at both.

These are words from a Jewish convert. Her parents never even mentioned Christ. I don’t have a problem telling my children about The New Testament.

what truth? Jews don’t see any truth there.

And what backwater swamp in the US is there where Jews haven’t heard of the Christian Bible before?

I am Catholic and my folks never gave me the Book of Mormon.

I never knew about the Book of Mormon till I was 18 or 19 and even then I was only mildly curious. Eventually I did acquire it but never read it…and I don’t think I ever will…thinking about it all again…maybe I should.

I have two books by Edith Stein…both are way over my head. I don’t say that much about any of the books on my shelf. She was one very smart woman.

I must admit, Edith Stein is pretty hard to read because she was a philosopher, maybe the movie would help you instead. Why would you become a Mormon?? They do not believe in The Trinity.

that is fair…can I ask though do Jews ever read the NT just out of curiosity or to learn about what Catholics believe for discussion purposes?

I would say that some Orthodox Jews generally do not. Probably not even as adults. Personally, I read the Gospels a while back. And I shouldn’t have said there’s no truth in it for Jews, that’s not accurate. THere are concepts discussed in the Christian Bible that are also part of Jewish beliefs.

So how do Catholics and Jews (non-orthodox) discuss religion (similarities /differences etc.) if everyone is not on the same page, so to speak?

I think we’re doing ok so far. There was a time, btw when religious jews wouldn’t read anything outside of the Tanakh and its commentaries. Elucid geomtry, plato, etc.

I agree we are doing ok so far:) …that is interesting I did not know that (bolded part)

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

I have been reading all the replys, and I am a bit sad really, if you look at the heading, “The life of Edith Stein”, what I am reading is some sort of Jew versus Christian bashing.

STOP, in the name of all that is HOLY. Have none of you ever read St. Paul>, where he talks about the two halves of Israel, & REAL UNITY between God’s people. Read it.

The wealth of all we believe and require for salvation is in the Holy Word, Old & New testament, no part can function on its own.
It is the history of God’s people.

What we need here is some humility.

Just like the beloved Edith Stein.

Peace be With You All

I think the problem here is not Jews vs. Christians

But rather that the OP does not realize that the Bible can really be looked at as two seperate books. The Jews do not simply exclude the new testament, to them it is a sequel that is not inspired. Just as the book of Mormon is a sequel to the New Testament but Catholics believe it is not inspired.

Edith Stein was a wonderful woman, but let us not immediately think that because of what one woman did, it means immediately that all Jews who do not do that are hiding the Truth.
