I haven’t been to my parish since early on in Advent last year which is the last time I served mass. One of the distinct pleasures of being an altar server is seeing the faces of the faithful as they present themselves for Holy Eucharist. To be sure, Catholics are nothing if not ordinary in their outward appearance. There’s nothing really to distinguish you from anyone else, and yet to see you lined up for Holy Communion, like a bunch of lowly beggars with their hands outstretched for what has all the outside appearances of a humble piece of bread, stirs my soul. It’s a sight to behold.
I was asked to help impose ashes today and to serve as an EMHC. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen everyone. It’s also been a long time since I’ve been so close to the altar. It stirred my soul to be back at my home parish even as I reflected at all the different masses I’ve celebrated and all the different Catholics I’ve met over the past few months.
You Catholics are an amazing group of people. I pray you have a profitable Lent.
