Has anyone read much about them? I’m reading Richard P. McBrien’s book about the lives of the popes through John Paul II and it’s very interesting.

Anyone else read anything about them?

Yes, I read Lord Norwich’s book “The Popes: A History” which was published last year. The early popes were ,on the whole, quite different from what we think of as the papacy today. Whatever troubles our Holy Father has today, at least he doesn’t have barbarians at the gates, rioting Roman citizens, aggressive foreign emperors, malarial pontine swamps and the rest of it!

True, in addition most of the early popes were marytred. Although one need only look to Blessed JP2 to see that the threat is still very real.

After many years of seeing Fr. Richard P. McBrien as the “Catholic” consultant on the secular news stations giving his public dissent against certain Catholic teachings, I have no desire to read anything by Fr. McBrien nor trust anything written by him.

i would like it if someone could recommend a good book about the history of the Papacy.
i would like to learn about the history of earlier Popes.
