Agree 100%. Jesus of Surburbia is staggeringly good musically. I assume that Armstrong’s lyrics are going to be stupid and offensive, but fortunately I have an amazing filter in my brain which tunes out inanity and retains the gold. In this case, the music! :o

One other song I’ve thought about which deserves recognition: “Cheyenne Anthem” by Kansas.
 
When the song , Don’t cry for me Argentina , first came out,
I couldn’t stand it,was way to long,can’t remember who sang it,it was bad,
But Then I heard Olivia. Newton-John sing it,and she just had a better interpretation of the work, then I enjoyed this long long song ,
 
When I was in my “rock music” phase, as a teenager in the '70’s, the one band I really couldn’t stand was Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It just struck me as pretentious, boring, drivel. Then one day recently I accidentally left YouTube running while I was doing other stuff in the house, and a whole ELP concert was played, and I wasn’t bothered to turn it off. By the end I was thoroughly enjoying it!

So, Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. 8:54.

“Bat Out Of Hell” I believe clocked in at over 9 minutes.

A lot of prog rock songs – staples of FM radio – are longer than the standard 2-3 minutes of AM Top 40 tunes. The trope is AM radio with stacks of 45’s, FM with stacks of albums (AOR originated on FM, I believe). FM deejays were not limited to the short single-version of a song, and could play the longer “album version” or the even-longer “extended versions”.

My question is, how did deejays go potty before “In A Gadda Da Vida”? 😃

I can listen to the whole thing in the blink of it eye, so it seems to feel like.
 
“Empire Of The Clouds” by Iron Maiden clocks in at 18 minutes.

A few tracks on the Titus Andronicus album (also a double album) also exceed the 10-15 minute mark.
 
Although I don’t listen to it much anymore, back in the day this is what I was into. I’ve seen most of them in concert as well. By the way to all you guitar freaks out there, take a listen to the last track with the incredible guitar sounds of the late Gary Moore!
