The Lord has been raised!

Something to note: When the 2 from Emmaus returned to the Apostles…we get this curious phrase…“the Lord has indeed been raised and has appeared to Simon”.

Lazarus was “raised” from the dead about a week before…and it appears (from these words above) that the disciples are equating the resurrection of Jesus with God “raising” up yet another. I really don’t think the discples understood the serious difference in the Resurrection of Jesus from that of say…the widow’s son at Naim…until He opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures and reminded them of His words.
Perhaps…they really didn’t understand until 50 days later when the Holy Spirit was poured out on them.

I imagine there was much to contemplate as there still is. Ramifications do seem to have come down through time. Understanding no doubt became clearer 50 days later. Grace by the moment, same program in full effect.

Perhaps that is why the Gospel emphasis on “the locked doors”…showing how this is not a resurrection like Lazarus…but that Jesus has extraordinary powers.

They remembered He had said He would rise from the dead but the sight of His bloodstained body may well have shattered all their hopes.

The Jews were strict monotheists who had great difficulty in grasping, let alone accepting, the literal meaning of “the Son of God”. The ensuing heresies are clear evidence of the failure to understand the significance of the Resurrection. Even today Unitarians reject the divinity of Christ while among those who accept His moral principles the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity is one of the main stumbling blocks to belief in Christianity.

Yet the apparent absurdity of a man-who-is-God is further evidence of the truth of His teaching. No one has ever explained the origin of belief in the greatest love the world has ever known…

I think that the difference between the resurrection of Lazarus and Jesus is that Lazarus was not resurrected in a glorified body; and the eyewitness to the resurrection of Lazarus had to unwrap him from his grave clothes, after Jesus had raised him from the dead. Jesus, however, was resurrected with a glorified body, which is the reason that He could pass through His grave clothes while He was in a supine position, leave His sepulcher before the sealed door was open, and suddenly appear in rooms where the doors were locked. I think that when the Bible says that Jesus was “the firstborn from the dead” (Colossians 1:18), it is indicating that He was the first born with a resurrected and glorified body.
