“Rejoice, the LORD is with you.” Luke 1:28
This greeting marks the beginning of the gospel, “in a strict sense” so says theologian Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in “Mary: the Church at the Source” which he co-authored with theologian Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Ignatius, 1997 (from the fourth edition of the German)
Tradition has rendered “Rejoice” as “Hail”. But, the root word “rejoice” is more appropriate. It is used four times in the OT to indicate messianic joy. (See Zeph 3:14, Joel 2:21, Zech 9:9, and Lam 4:21)
“The new joy comes from God and breaks through the world’s ancient and interminable sadness. Mary is not greeted in some vague or indifferent way; God…greets her …to rejoice in the innermost depth of our being.” (page 64)
We all vaguely admit that the Mass is made of prayers derived from scripture, and I think it is good to actually look at their origin once in a while. I came across his analysis as I was reading the book mentioned above.
Mary’s joy should be our joy as well.
