I went to confession today and the priest told me as a penance that I should write down the Lord’s Prayer and state it backwards (starting from the 7th petition to Intro). I did a quick google search on this and immediately found sites on occult practices/witchcraft, so I’m really scared about what I’m getting myself into (supposedly this is or playing the Lord’s Prayer backwards is a practice in such dark works). He told me the point of doing this was to ascend from the last petition all the way up to “Our Father, who art in heaven.” I really want to trust this priest, but I also wanted to make sure that I wasn’t getting myself involved in the aforementioned nonsense (or maybe I’m just being silly). Thoughts?
 
I wasn’t going to the internet to deliberately find fault. I just wanted to see whether this was a common practice. However, simply googling “The Lord’s Prayer Reversed” has occult/witchcraft sites as the search engine’s main results. So no, I absolutely was not finding fault with it nor was that ever my intention to begin with. I happened to stumble across this and got concerned.

Again, I’m not knocking the priest. I just happened to come across these websites and got concerned. That is all. What is with all these personal attacks? Please address the issue.

I suspect there is a difference here between literally saying the prayer backwards (like, with each sound in reverse order), with occultic intent, and simply reciting the petitions in reverse order, while still praying sincerely to the true God.
 
I don’t know, why would we reverse the prayer that Our Lord gave us?

Perhaps because we say it so often we stop paying attention to the words and take it for granted.

The demonic reverses every word of it, not every petition of it. Instead of “Our Father, Who art in Heaven…deliver us from evil…” They say, “evil from us deliver…Heaven in art Who, Father Our…”
 
The OP wasn’t looking to find fault with it. S/he searched online, like any reasonable person, and in the process it drew the OP to occult sites.

I would have done the same thing, as I have never heard of saying the Lord’s Prayer backwards.

Haha. No. He explicitly mentioned starting with the last petition and working my way up to “Our Father.”
 
I wonder if they still have those machines which can play recordings in reverse. Now that would really sound demonic.
 
This is an interesting penance.

Just today when something happened as I was out and about, I prayed the last two petitions of the Our Father – not the whole prayer, just the last two petitions.

Said in order, the seven petitions teach us so much about our relationship with God, the nature of prayer, and so on.

But each petition is deeply beautiful and provides a focus for lengthy meditation.
 
That actually does make you look at the prayer differently. Very interesting, and clarifying.
