In our parish, during The Lord’s Prayer, we hold hands. We have done this for a very long time. Just recently, I have heard from two different members of our parish that this is not an acceptable stance during The Lord’s Prayer. Can you please tell me what is acceptable and where I can find answers to questions like this.

Thank you!

Jimmy Akin’s book *Mass Confusion * is an excellent resource for questions like this. Concerning holding hands during the Our Father, Jimmy tells us, “The Holy See has not ruled directly on this issue. In a response to a query, however, the Holy See stated that holding hands ‘is a liturgical gesture introduced spontaneously but on personal initiative; it is not in the rubrics’… For this reason, no one can be required to hold hands during the Our Father.” The practice is discouraged.
