The Love Of The Father: John 3:16
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This really is GOOD NEWS!! I have often meditated upon this scripture, and one of the Catholic posters here at CAF mentioned that they were starting to study this wonderful text too. It seemed like a logical thing to us to also start a topic, discussing our respective views on this text. I would like to invite comments and thoughts and testimonies from anyone interested in studying the subjects of this verse.

The first thought that has come to me about this verse is the phrase: “For God so loved…” What is suggested by this phrase alone, could actually be the entire Gospel, were it correctly understood and lived out in the lives of believers.

What does this mean to you? What has been your experience?

To me, this verse, this phrase, is all about the love of The Father; and of His Son to erring mankind. It describes, and models a special type of love that never ceases to amaze me!

What are your thoughts? Is this really GOOD NEWS to you? Why?
 
God bless you for your responses to and appreciation of the extraordinary love of the Father for us; and the extraordinary love of the Son in accepting incarnation.
 
The amazing love of God. If only we could really farthom this love and to truly believe that He loves us in this manner and to be absolutely and exceedingly confident that it is true - then we truly understand the heart of the Father and live under His wings. Why would everything else matter?
 
John 3:For God so loved the world that he gave 7 his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

Personally I love the way St. Paul puts a personal touch to this gospel passage and so should every one else;

Galations 2:20
yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God **who has loved me and given himself up for me. **

It took me a long time to understand God’s love.

When people said Jesus loves you I would think but how can that be since we are so unlovable - a lot of us!

Then I began to realise that God would never have conceived of the idea of sending His only Son into the world to teach us, to instruct us, to found His Church, to create the infrastructure and resources for our salvation. Above all, Jesus would not have suffered and died on the Cross if he did not love us.

God has a plan for our lives. He created us and gave us all we have and at the same time he gave us free will. We, in our weakness, fail to respond in the way God wants.

Life is short and the only real meaning is to accept God’s love and follow Him so that we can have eternal life.

I remember in the old “penny Catechism” the question “Why did God make you?”. The answer was “God made me to know Him, to love Him and to Serve him in this world so that we can be happy with him forever in the next.” That was a long, long, time ago! If I got it wrong perhaps someone can correct me.

So, understanding God’s love is fundamental to all Christian belief.

The expression of love and the plea of the heart of our heavenly Father in the sacrifice of His Son, Our Lord Jesus, can not be mistaken for anything but genuine Fatherly love for each of us who accepts Him. Simply compared, the sacrifice a soldier may make throwing himself on a grenade giving his life voluntarily in order to save the lives of a few or many others we consider heroic without doubt. But in realizing this love comes from “The Being” who created all and could do as He so willed, for love of His adopted children sent to us His beloved Son who not only offered salvation to all man through His taking on human form specifically to suffer the torture and death we inflicted upon Him, but for our eternal life, and His gift of shares in Paradise. We are only required to recognize each other as brothers and sisters in Him living charitably and humbly according to the way Jesus taught us.

It is beautiful to meditate on God’s infinite love for us. I was blessed with 3 beautiful children and sharing in God’s miracle of life really opened my eyes to what true, selfless love is.

I could never refuse their love, no matter what happened. I have been a horrible sinner and have caused them incalculably pain, yet they never stopped loving me!

As Pope Benedict reminded us, “Deus Caritas Est (On Christian Love - God is Love), January 25, 2006”

Hi! Thanks for the great testimony. At first I was going to say I think you had a typo because the verse is actually 1 Jo.4:8 that says “God is love;” but when I double checked my Bible on this, I discovered something interesting. “God is love” is actually in BOTH texts! Now this is interesting for it is repeated twice in just a few verses! It must mean that God sees this as an important truth that He wants us to be convicted of. And, I noticed too while meditating and studying this truth that the Bible says too “Love never fails.” (1 Cor.13:8).

In other words GOD NEVER FAILS!!!

The one thought I have lately concerns how God stopped Abraham from sacrficing his own son, yet allowed his own son to be sacrificed for us all.

I really can’t get my head around it.

This is one of my favorite meditations; God tested Abraham’s faith, and Abrahams faith was such that he believed God could give his son’s life back to him if he took it, for God is the giver of life and taker of life. So God saw Abrahams faith and accredited him “the father of faith”. But God said to show his Love and Mercy, God said “I will supply the sacrifice MYSELF” which echoed throughout the ages, to himself giving of his Son for us, what is more Jesus went willing to his death for his father to save humanity, secondly Abrahams son went willing also to be bound up for the sacrifice, who also carried the wood on his back as Jesus did with his cross up the hill to be sacrificed.

God so loves “the apple of his eye” which is you and me. thanks for letting me share this, God bless you.

This verse, though always meaning a lot to me, means much more to me now that I have a son of my own.

It doesn’t matter how much I love you all, I am not sending my son to die for you… Sorry to be honest 🤷 😉

God’s love is infinite and mine, while obviously is finite, is also a little selfish. :yup:

I am currently doing a seminar on John 3:16 and I was discussing with a friend that you have opened a thread on the subject. Now I have told you that I have never met any SDAs. I know that here we have them because I have driven past a building which said “Seventh Day Adventists” outside.

I told my friend that you had opened this thread and that it would be interesting to see the responses and that it would illuminate me to the different thoughts and dimensions which the other posters bring to the thread. When my friend heard you were an SDA she said “But how can that be? The SDAs believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel! They don’t believe Jesus was the Son of God.”

So what is she saying? - that SDAs don’t believe in the Trinity? I am sure you believe in salvation from other threads. So how does this work P101? How can we be discussing the subject of this thread if you do not recognise Jesus as both human and Divine and the Son of the Father, who died on the cross for my sins and the sins of the world?

My friend has got to be mistaken. And I can’t wait to show her your response.

That actually is an easy one! Jesus’ personal sacrifice saved us all! You I and all the people whoever lived or shall live were saved by Jesus gift! His life was worth all of our lives put together! He paid a debt that he didn’t owe, because we owed a debt that we couldn’t pay! Isaac wasn’t God, his death wouldn’t have saved anyone would It? Study the pasages and determine what lesson God was having realed to us! That wasn’t it!

WOW! Excellent point! 👍 Just like when Jesus said "This is My Body and This is My Blood 12 times! He wanted us to know it was so important that we understood and complied with his command to actually Eat His Body and Blood! I think you accidently hit on a truth! Praise God! :signofcross: **

Actually, Prot, you might want to re-read my post! :rolleyes: The truth you hit on is that God repeats himself when he wants us to understand that something it is an important truth!

That explains why Jesus said 12 times that the Bread and Wine was His Body and Blood plus that had to be eaten to obtain salvation! 👍
