[This is a copy of what i posted in the CA book club, i placed it here again to discuss it with those who a not in the club. Mods feel free to relocate it to the proper section]

I was browsing through my local bookstore (a general bookstore) yesterday, and in the Christian section, I came across a book called ‘The Magical Power of the Saints:Evocation and Candle Rituals’ by Ray T. Malbrough. I wasn’t able to read through it for long, but i came home and researched it online. I found out that Ray T. Malbrough is an ordained minister, and the founder of the All Saints Chapel of Faith Church. However, is it right to pervert our Catholic saints like this? I found this book to be very distasteful, and disappointed to find it on the same shelf with Catholic books and Bibles in this store.

The following is an exerpt from the book, taken from the site:

Please tell me if there is anything I can do to protest against this book (if possible)

*This book can be your personal guide to help you call on the saints as your spiritual allies. You will learn how to work with seventy-four different saints through the use of “seven-day vigil candles” (saint candles), prayers, psalms, herbal baths, and more. For example, you would call on Saint Benedict (whose candle color is white and day of the week is Saturday) to help end fevers, heal sick animals and more. You might call on Our Lady of Charity (whose candle color is yellow and day of the week is also Saturday) for protection of the home and family, to bring a new lover, or to obtain better finances. But

The Magical Power of the Saints includes much more:

Find out which saint can best help you for any situation, along with that saint’s specific day of the week and color of candle
Learn rituals for fifty-seven different situations-such as attracting good fortune, srengthening your marriage, and improving your business
Use divination to discover which ingredients will summon the proper powers to help you in any specific situation
Locate passages in the Bible that support the practice of divination
Learn how to use prayer to honor your departed ancestors and communicate with them
Discover the best way to prepare and use the saint candles
Recite the correct biblical psalm for your specific need
Read messages in a candle flame to see if your prayers will be answered
The Magical Power of the Saints includes over forty-five illustrations of saints to help you in your work. For powerful, practical magic, get The Magical Power of the Saints.*

No, it’s not right…it’s new-age garbage. Run in the opposite direction. You could talk to the manager of the store, but they probably will just sell whatever. Pray.

You could point out that this book does NOT contain the Catholic faith and actually stands in opposition to it, and that it properly belongs in the New Age section.

Exactly. This runs alongside what Wiccans believe. I had a friend that used to be Wiccan. They ‘probably’ put it there b/c of Saints being in the tite. Evocation and Candles should have been another clue it definitely didn’t belong in Christian section. Tell the store mgr.

Sounds a lot like the “magick” that I used to practice as part of being a Wiccan. 😦

I suppose the danger there is that you could get evil spirits impersonating Saints, especially if these ‘practices’ are done outside a Christian context.

thank you all for your replies, by the store mgr putting that book in the christian section of the store, it could easliy mislead any beginner christian, or people considering converting to christianity.

on another note, I recently heard a baptist leader preaching about how you can use the pslams to ‘curse’ people… i really dont know what this world is coming to… the only thing i can do is pray about it… any other action i take (eg. protesting or writing petitions for removal) only ends up in everyone debating on "censorship’ and ‘freedom of speech’

There are all kinds of self professed clergy that make stupid claims about scripture or Catholics…I have yet to see any that isn’t a load of hogwash…I’ll bet that Baptist preacher never saw the inside of a seminary…he just picked up the Bible and put his own spin on things

Magic is a dead give away this is some wiccan stuff…Catholics don’t believe in or practice magic, they pray to God for help and we ask the saints to help us pray

Well in the sense that one can pray for a natural evil (not a moral evil) to happen to someone for the good, as long as one’s heart is charitable and not evil towards the person, it is permissible I have read.
I don’t think its very Christian to pray for evil to befall anyone…at least not from what I have been taught…Can you explain this to me?

This is what is called ‘natural evil’ or ‘suffering’ not ‘moral evil’ i.e. it is not a sin, but it is a suffering or pain or harm to another person materially. If you’re not clear on this distinction the book, ‘Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence’ by Fr. Saint-Jure and St. Claude has some good explanation of this distinction and quotes such as,‘I am the Lord, and there is none else. I form light and create darkness; I make peace and create evil. I, the Lord, do all these things. It is I who bring both death and life, I who inflict wounds and heal them,’ (Isaias 45:6-7, etc.)

During the famous attack of the Muslims at the Battle of Lepanto, ‘Our Lady of Victory’ the rosary was prayed for their defeat in war. The newly canonized St. Nuno Alveres Periera was a famous warrior whose prayers and leadership decided battles in which he was greatly outnumbered, we are permitted by the virtue of justice to punish criminals for their crimes by causing them pains (flogging for example), we are permitted to cause pain as part of the medical process for surgery though in this case we regret it and it is not desired as punishment, etc.

So, for example, if someone were very rich and wealthy and using that wealth for abortions, supporting pornography, etc. we could pray for this person or business to go bankrupt.

We are permitted to pray for the destruction of harmful animals, explicitly cursing them to destruction, ‘The Roman Ritual’ (an official text) has a prayer proscribed for priests to this effect that says I quote:

Let us pray.
Almighty everlasting God, the donor of all good things, and the
most merciful pardoner of our sins; before whom all creatures bow
down in adoration, those in heaven, on earth, and below the
earth; preserve us sinners by your might, that whatever we
undertake with trust in your protection may meet with success by
your grace. And now as we utter a curse on these noxious pests,
may they be cursed by you; as we seek to destroy them, may they
be destroyed by you; as we seek to exterminate them, may they be
exterminated by you; so that delivered from this plague by your
goodness, we may freely offer thanks to your majesty; through
Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

I have not fully investigated the full range and how of what we may pray prayers of of this kind, I am still learning – but these are some authoritative examples, and the scriptures themselves are full of similar.

In all cases however the spirit of charity, that is love of God and ultimate good should motivate these matters and not a hatred wishing the person or persons ill for its own sake.

I could easily see someone motivated for wrong reasons throwing imprecations of this kind around, and so without right motivation and even with them they should be used only sparingly and when there is no doubt as to the good. The practice is not common in these times – HOWEVER, the reasons they are allowed are clear and proper to understanding God and justice, anyone who would deny that these things are allowed or have a fundamental problem that they are would actually have a problem with heresy and misunderstanding the nature of the love of God.

So, as I said earlier that what is known as a ‘natural evil’ or ‘suffering’ or ‘pain’ can clearly be prayed for under the aspect of God’s justice and medicinal correction, at the very least, and this has to be understood. Whether it’s spanking children or punishing criminals or defeating enemies. It is a mark of the problems of these times that it is not and that I have to do research to gain a proper understanding of the full ramifications of it, but at least the natural law supports it in every person’s heart so it comes naturally and actually is a cultural thing that we have trouble understanding it. 🙂
