What was the purpose of the maniple during mass?

From what I remember from the 1950’s, it’s use was basically ornamental. The Priest would use it to remove perspiration from his face, it was sort of a handkerchief, although there was a certain way it was worn. It was made in all the liturgical colors, so as to be correct for the liturgical season. I think the Vatican removed its use in the 1960’s but I have heard that they (priests) still use it while celebrating a form of Latin Mass.

From about 1200 on: to indicate that one had been ordained a subdeacon.

The Maniple was worn by “Major Orders” in the Roman Rite. Since Rome considered subdeacons major orders (until VII), one was marked as being in major orders.

Its origins as a hanky are well documented, but its functional purpose was indicative more than practical.

It also symbolises spiritually the tears, sweat, toil of the priesthood.
