October 3rd will mark the fifth anniversary of the murder of the Most Reverend Alberto Ramento, Ninth Obispo Maximo of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. The story of his life and death is inspirational, and I’d like to invite my CAF brethren to take a look:

The links at the bottom of the page are worthwhile as well.

Yout title is misleading. Mr Ramento is not a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. His church is a protestant sect that seeks to be the equivalent of the Epispocal Church in the Phillipines. And, the Roman Catholic Church does not recognize its apostelic succession nor its sacriments. Its membership in the PI is less than that of most major Protestant denominations, which makes it truely a minor sect.

how is this misleading? The man’s title was bishop, this is the non-Catholic section of the forums? The purpose of your comments seems to be a little hard -hearted but perhaps I am not reading your comments correctly.

I’m sorry if this seems harsh, but just because a man of God is murdered, that doesn’t automatically make him a ‘martyr’, by any means. If he was murdered solely for his religious beliefs, then you might be able to call him that. But, according to the police, the killer’s motive was most likely robbery. It’s possible that it might also have been in retribution for his personal political views, but not likely for his actual religious views. They’re not the same thing, even if his politics were strongly influenced by his religious views.

It’s still a sad story, any way you look at it, and I’m sorry for your loss. 😦

Perhaps, but I believe that he is. Would you catagorize the Roman Catholic Archbishop Oscar Romero as a martyr? I think their situations are similar, only Archbishop Romero was murdered in a more public way.

But I didn’t want to debate the definition of martyrdom, only for people to remember a man who dedicated most of his life to working for the benefit of the poor, and who was taken away too soon.

Thank you for taking the time to read the link.

Based on the politics that I am aware of in the Phil, due to what Ramento stood for, it is the belief of the IFI that he was killed, sanctioned by somebody, for it.

But it could have been robbery also, as you stated.
