The Meaning of "The Truth"

In John 14 : 6 Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life;”. In this statement what is meant by “the truth”? The reason I ask is that when discussing certain teachings of the Church, say for instance baptism, is it for the forgiveness of sins or just an outward sign and the question is put forward which is the true, the answer is Jesus is the truth it says so in John 14 : 6. It is as if you ask wicih is true Statement A or Statement B and they say Jesus is truth. If I had a better idea what Jesus meant when He said He was “the truth” maybe I would be less confused by that response. I hope I made myself clear.

His word and ngdom are truth.

Forgiveness of sin is the kingdom which he proclaimed and lived.

The way of the cross is truth.

These words are all synonymous with God.

Truth - Life - Love - Existence - Infinite

He is the Truth - which is Life - which is Love - which is existence itself (God is the “I AM”) - which is infinite

All of these words mean the same thing. You can not have any of them without the other.

Satan is the father of all lies. Things synonymous with Satan -

Lies - Deception - Non-existence - Evil - Hate - Destruction

We are told the path to destruction is wide and those who take it are many. We are told the path to eternal life is the narrow one. Without the Truth of the Word (which is Jesus - the Word incarnate in the flesh) all that is left is lies and deception which are of Satan (the father of all lies).

Jesus means that he is the revelation of God to mankind–God’s Word to us. Jesus came to tell us and to prove to us that God loves us and wished to make a new covenant in Christ with us. That is how we know that what Christ told us and did for us is truth. Jesus told his Apostles to go to the whole world, baptizing and preaching. The baptism was to initiate us into the new covenant in Christ and the preaching was to both tell us about God’s new covenant in Christ’s love and to help us live the truth Christ gave us.

In the beginning of the Gospel of John, we get “in the beginning was the Word, etc. etc.” Jesus is the Word of God, i.e. He is the rational force by which the world was created. Anselm writes about this in his Monologion, in which he explores the Trinity from a philosophical perspective. Since Jesus is The Father’s word, and God is perfectly capable of expressing Himself and creation, Jesus is the perfect reflection of creation and of The Father. Jesus, as The Son and the Word (which Anselm asserts are the same, the term “the Son” being an analogy to the relationship between the perfect speaker and the perfect speech), literally encompasses all things created and uncreated within Himself, the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth

Every word that Jesus spoke, every mannerism, every non-verbal communication, everything He did was truth. Nothing feigned, never an action performed for the sake of impressing anyone-everything done in perfect truth. This world, on the other hand, doesn’t operate that way. We all live with varying degrees of truth or falsehood, we’re not perfect examples of placing truth above all else; we may even ask, as Pilate did, ‘what is truth?’ We struggle with purity of will, with being perfectly righteous IOW.

Man’s ways and man’s values aren’t 100% in tune with the universe, in line with God;'s will. Which is why Jesus could say that satan’s will holds sway in this world, the father of lies. Every way in which the truth is compromise, whether in tiny, small ways or large ones, is always 100% evil. Adam & Eve traded a truth for buying into a lie. And man has been living with lies ever since, to one degree or another.
