The meaning of the word "gate"

During the Easter Vigil, I came across the following passage:

“I will bless thee, and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the seashore: thy seed shall possess the gates of their enemies.” Gen 22:17.

I note the reference of “gates” is also mentioned notably in Matt 18:16 (the gates of hell). I just want to know exactly what does the word “gates” signify. Also, if there is any other biblical reference to it?

The reference here is to the gates of a walled city. If you control the gates, you control who can go in, and who can go out. You control what goods can go in or out, and set the terms. In other words, you have control of the life of the city.

So “gates” means gates.
 
in old times gates are very important. its where you enter cities and in times of war its also the best way to defeat the enemy within the city, by taking over the gate so you can enter the city. if you’re defending the city, you need to protect your gates. most walls are thick enough to withstand most enemy assaults.
 
“Your descendants will gain possession of the gates of their enemies” - Gen. 22:17

“And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” - Matt 16:18

It could also mean that it is the Church that is on the offensive, reclaiming the world for Christ against the usurpers. Thus, the gates of hell will crumble and be unable to withstand the Church’s offense.
 
The gates of heaven**/**the Gates of hell

When the Father lifted Peter up and united him to the divine Fatherhood, Peter knew Jesus as Son. Peter doesn’t experience this knowing that he was being lifted up to the Father

The union of likeness the Father shared with Peter opened a door that no one can close because it can’t be undone.

As soon as it ends it passes to memory which is of the world the prince of which immediately swooped through desperate to distort the meaning of the Father’s revelation to Peter.

Because Peter is no longer united to the Father the experience has become a memory and memory is proper to the world.

So a door, the opening of which passes through the world, is founded on earth, and now established in the person who is Peter.

Jesus responds to His Father’s work and immediately tells Peter who revealed it and gives the keys to this door to him and renames him for what he is now. He is the earth on which a door has been placed, that reveals Jesus as God the Son.

Soon after, the meaning of Peter’s memory, of knowing Jesus as a Son, is turned inward toward himself ,and so Peter accepts a distorted meaning of the fatherly bond he remembers and acts as if bound to Jesus as a father to a son.

In this way Satan attempts to steal the authority from the Father to Peter and exerts his will over Jesus.

No! (the crucifixion) this must not happen!(pp). Satan say’s.

This is the gates of hell’s first attempt to prevail over the Church.

Jesus is keeping the gates for Peter since Peter doesn’t know how yet.

“Get thee behind me Satan! For you don’t think like* God* but as *man *thinks.”

Satan,s sword of deception melted into nothingness and Satan with it by the heat of those words from the mouth of Jesus.
