As Catholics, we are taught that we are saved by the grace of God through faith and works. I have always wondered then how someone who (due to severe mental illness) is unable to have faith in Christ and to perform good works can be saved. Does God simply make an exception for that person?

You are a little mixed up there. None of OUR WORKS will get us to heaven. We are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ.

A Catholic lives one’s faith by naturally doing good works as a result of what one believes, but the works are an extension of believing in Jesus’ teachings and of having faith, not as a prerequisite of gaining heaven. So in other words, if one has faith, one will naturally do the good works, as they go hand in hand, but the works play no part in getting us in the gate.

God has more compassion for the ill than we can possibly fathom.

How is an infant saved??

He/she is saved by the actions and protections of others taken on behalf of the child out of Love. The same can be said for the mentally ill.

The person who is mentally ill (like a small child) has lesser capacity and therefore diminished culpability. If such a one has loving family/friends who see that they have been baptized and pray mightily for their health here and their salvation at death, God will take all of this into account.

God has the advantage of being GOD in such matters. I’m pretty sure he can figure it out, don’t lose sleep worrying about His ability to do so.

What kind of mental illness are you talking about?

I know people with schizophrenia or bipolar still can have faith in God and love and adore him and go to church,

If even animals have a sense of God ,i think people even with disability can know when God is around them,and through loving/caring people around them.

At one Catholic Church one girl with down syndrom always goes for daily mass and she seems to love God and show reverence for him.
