I really think this author is on point. I love this part:
We cannot rely on our leaders to be the examples of right action. We must be the example. We must be the role models. We must each of us make the personal commitment to discourage the fear-mongering, the demonizing, the rageful, hate speech about those who don’t share our beliefs.
 
The sort of unity which tells us to downplay our differences because they are not important leads to indifferentism, a state the Church condemns. There are things which are important, there are things worth fighting for, there are things worth… wait for it… risking alienating people around us for.

Yes, if someone I am with says something like Catholics should just obey the law and not make a fuss, I will explain, politely I hope, why she is dead wrong.

And if those around us say that I am causing disunity because I won’t roll over and let religious rights be run over in the name of an unwholesome tolerance and a false unity, so be it.

We will never be united until we are all full followers of Christ–that is the only true unity.
