Imagine showing a television to a lost tribe of people who have had no contact with the outside world. Now try explaining to them that the picture and sound of the television comes from broadcasting companies. The tribal people would probably look at you like you were nuts, insisting that the sound and picture were originating from within the television set itself.

Now, rethink where the prompting of inner voices come from; might it be that these promptings too are originating from afar, and not merely a product of our brain? The unconscious is heavily influenced by Satan!

It’s interesting to note that human beings make great television antennas. I do not think this is coincidental.

Where on earth do you get this from? Do you think it up? The idea that the unconcious mind is heavily influenced by Satan is contrary to not only Freud and Jung, as well as the entire scientific community, it is counter to Catholic teaching, and makes me wonder where and by whom you were catechized.
The unconscious mind is influenced by Satan only to the extent that the individual permits it to be. Satanic possession of individuals is rare and exists mainly in the minds of Hollywood screenwriters.
A simple blessing (sign of the cross) with holy water will keep Satan well at bay. The saying of a simple prayer: “Lord have mercy on me, a sinner” will do likewise. For a longer effect, the daily recitation of the Rosery will do wonders for your sub-conscious, as well as for your soul!

that is something I never though about OP

Satan isn’t gonna like my mind cause I keep it on Channel God as long as I can 😃

The mind seems to be the interface of body and spirit
good response. I think that human reason and intelligence is, strictly speaking, entirely physical, but our experience of these physical phenomena is what most people think of when they think of a mind, and our experience is entirely spiritual.

The power of intellection (the mind) is spiritual.

We start with sensory (name removed by moderator)ut. Everything we know starts as sensory knowledge (seeing, hearing touch, etc) That (name removed by moderator)ut goes to the mind and from that sensory (name removed by moderator)ut the mind can develop universals. For example, we see Rex and FIdo. From that experience we can develop the concept of “dog” such that I can say, "I see a dog walking down the street and you would know what I was talking about even without seeing the animal walking down the street. However the construct of “dog” is a “universal” or class of being and as such has no existence in the real world EXCEPT for the individual occurances.

The mind can also develop and understand imaginary concepts that have no particular occurances in reality, such as one eye, one horn flying purple people eaters.

The mind can also develop spirtual concepts such as God.

Lastly, the mind can generate abstract concepts such as truth, justice and the like. These have absolutly no examples in reality (when was the last time you went into a store and asked for a pound of truth?)

The mind is reliant on the body for sensory (name removed by moderator)ut but the act of intellection is purely spiiritual

Circumferential

Nice concise and cogent thought!

However, if you don’t mind ( no pun intended) I would alter the generality of your statement with the specific thought that the mind is the interface of the language capability of the brain and the spiritual component (nous) in which the brain is immersed. Thinking is impossible without language.

Only humans have minds because only humans have a language capabiltiy.

The mind seems to be the interface of body and spirit
very interesting idea

because of course mind and body are ways of understanding the human experience that seem to be referring to very different things

it is odd to think that pain for example can be correlated to neural activity:
speaking in terms of mind, one describes severity, qualities like sharpness, throbbing etc;
but in terms of neural functioning, it is seen as the activity of axons, neurotransmitters, travelling action potentials

it is with the quality of wholeness that belongs to the spirit, that it is all one in the person

ultimately it is the soul that animates both the mind and the body;
yet measuring different properties of either, there is no trace of it

but, here we are

If a human body could be made to survive without a brain by artificially continuing oxygenation, waste removal, nutrition etc., would that human body still have a mind that could still conceptualize?

but if someone hears that sentence, they don’t imagine dog, in the general, abstract sense, walking down the street, they immagine a particular dog, be it a retriever, lab, or spaniel.

We know how to recognise a dog from our sensory (name removed by moderator)ut (A dog is a type of animal which has x physical characteristics and y behaviors), and we imagine an individual animal that fits these qualifications.
The mind can also develop and understand imaginary concepts that have no particular occurances in reality, such as one eye, one horn flying purple people eaters.
In this case, my stimulant is the sentence you provided. Using sensory (name removed by moderator)ut and memory,we can mix the sensory (name removed by moderator)uts we have experenced to produce an image of a one-horned, one-eyed monster that eats flying purple people.
The mind can also develop spirtual concepts such as God.
Yes, we can develop spiritual concepts, but these are pure rational calculation. we can’t actually imagine them.
Lastly, the mind can generate abstract concepts such as truth, justice and the like.
all of which provide advanced social animals with evolutionary benefits.

Our intellect can be reduced entirely to either reactions to external stimuli, or evolutionary hard-wiring. Our mind however, includes conscious experience of intellectual processes, and that is the function of the soul.

While I do agree with you that the rosary in particular does wonders, I have to wonder how much experience you’ve had with these things that you could say just make the sign of the Cross with Holy Water and that ought to be enough. If that were enough, then why did Jesus’s disciples bring some possessed people to Him saying “why could not we cast it out?” And Jesus said to them that some kinds of demons only come out through much prayer and fasting. “Much prayer and fasting” is a lot more than “bless yourself once with holy water.”

I also disagree that the individual has, in all cases, censorship power over the suggestions of the evil one. I submit, rather, that, as the Scriptures say, “Satan goes about like a lion prowling, seeking whom he may devour.” I think the wickedness and snares of the evil one are many and subtle, and we can never be too careful in discerning or pray too much. I think Satan’s influence is far and wide and is often where you’d least expect it.

But surely — to keep close to Sacraments and prayer, is the best defense. I just disagree with your dismissal of the preponderance of their influence, and suggest that perhaps that very dismissal of yours is at least partly at their prompting!

Pray to Saint Michael! Amen!

A good thought experiment. You could also use the alternative experiment: If we found evidence of beings who have superior rational faculties but where the existence of a soul is questionable, such as in Artificial intelligence, clones, aliens, or hominoids prior to adam and eve, just to name a few examples, would we continue to call the intellect a function of the soul?

I wouldn’t.

It’s been my experience that when arguments such as this are forwarded which question the connection between intellect and the so-called rational soul, the definition of soul gets tweaked to avoid such potential problems.

The thoughts comes from afar.
The idea that the unconcious mind is heavily influenced by Satan is contrary to not only Freud and Jung, as well as the entire scientific community, it is counter to Catholic teaching, and makes me wonder where and by whom you were catechized.
Freud and Jung were secular psychologists with secular thoughts. They wouldn’t dare mention anything religious or upset the groundwork which setup by psychoanalyst. I used to be a psychologist and found that I was explaining religion from a psychologist’s perspective, but then I switched and began thinking of psychology from a religious perspective. Studying psychology from a secular perspective will be void of Truth.

We were born in sin, and that sin requires Satan to have access to the unconscious.

WE AGREE!!! But I think Satan, who never sleeps, can have a negative influence even in a religious individuals.
