???
What’s wrong with oh my gosh? I use omg all the time.

Sheesh. 🤷

Anyone who is Christian (esp. Catholic) is uneducated and uncultured.

I solve calculus problems for fun, thermodynamics for a mental warm-up, and reactor design if I feel my brain is getting heavy - if that’s UN-educated, than what is educated? I play (on the piano, not mp3) Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin for my enjoyment - what is cultured? This accusation drives me nuts.

One that seriously bothers me is the claim by some that Mary was “only a vessel for Jesus to be born and nothing else” or worse yet, “Jesus was implanted in Mary’s womb” :ouch:. What those who make this claim, especially that latter one, (thinking they are preserving the exaltation of God alone) what they don’t realize is that they are, in essence, denying the Incarnation. If Jesus was not incarnate of the Virgin Mary then we have no Redeemer and thus no salvation. Why they can’t seem to get this is beyond me. Even in my most rabidly anti-Catholic days I would never have made such a claim.

What’s the misconception/misrepresentation of the Catholic faith that you get the most, or that annoys you to most? For me, it’s when Protestants constantly demonstrate that they don’t know wha papal infallibility is, and when they confuse a dogma with a faith practice. It just seems that every time a fundamentalist debates a Catholic (and it doesn’t matter what the debate topic is; they’ll find a way to twist the debate topic so they can go on their favorite rant about the Catholic Church; the Hunt-Keating debate is exhibit A of this), the fundamentalist gets something wrong about basic Catholic concepts like this.

Btw, I’m not saying that all fundamentalists are like this; I’m sure there are many here that know Catholicism very well. It’s just that popular fundamentalist speakers and debaters seem to consistently get Catholicism wrong.
Biggest misconception: That we’re stupid.

Despite however narcissistically Americans like to pay themselves on the back and insist they’re religious, the truth is American society is agnostic when you get down to the youger generations.

They will think that folks like us are just dumb sheep in pews who cannot think for ourselves and idiotically follow whatever we’re told to. Practising Catholics are not compromised of the world’a dumbest people and it’s very bigoted for people to think that way about us.

In a college class, another student called me a cracker worshipper.

The presumption they have is that our leaders are corrupt and that we’re the dumb masses of followers who obey without any thought. Ironically, it is exactly those bigots who listen to whatever the media and pop culture tells them to believe and they don’t bother questioning if they’re being fair or intelligent about it. They should take their own closed-minded advice and question why they’re told to believe about us. If Catholicism were as idiotic as these bigots believe, intelligent and decent people wouldn’t be in it. Yet we’re here, if they only opened their minds to see that.

But good luck with making that happen. Western society is so narcissistic that they will always insist they’re right, even if what they say today on one thing totally contradicts what they said yesterday about another. They’ll preach tolerance while being totally intolerant toward us. They’ll believe what the media tells them that Catholicism is closed-minded, and then they themselves will close-mindedly condemn us without giving one flying fig about why we believe what we do.

That bigotry and presumption of our stupidity is the worst disease against us from which all other anti-Catholic diseases flow.

I could care less what persons of other faiths think about the Catholic Church.

What chaps my butt is the amount of Catholics who have no clue what the Church teaches on carious subjects, and also believe that we have thrown out things like:

reverence let’s chatter 24-7!
kneeling let’s stand the whole time!
Adoration “I don’t get it”
the Rosary “that’s for old women who don’t know better”
various other devotions “superstitions of our parents”
and that at Mass we must copy every movement of the priest. “I’m special”

omg.

Drives me nuts.
This worries me; that many, many are receiving Holy Communion and hardly any go to Confession. Most ladies I talk to think there really isn’t anything wrong to use artificial birthcontrol or for their daughter or daughters-in-law to use whatever. All kinds of excuses to do so! So sad that to many Catholics don’t know, don’t understand or just plain don’t care to learn the truth about their Catholic Faith. God Bless, Memaw

How they have the neck, and cheek to fob off chunks of Christianity to justify that there brand of Protestant is correct, like the Catholic Church went astray (when ?) so they came along to fix it (HUH) when, give us a date. They never do of course. What gives with the Mary Worship the Orthodox revere Our Lady as much as we do, but according to Protestants its only Roman Catholics that do this, then there is the whore of Babylon, what gives with this one.

If they are the branches, why are they calling there mother a whore, if it was not for the Catholic Church, they would not be around, plus they would have no Bible.
I think all these accusations against the Catholic Church were told and retold over the last 500 or so years, to justify what they did by breaking away from the TRUE Catholic Church. So they resent us for being here. I bet some thought we would fizzle out and disappear. Many are learning that we are the ONE, HOLY, Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ, over 2,000 years ago. Welcome Home all converts. God Bless, Memaw

“Why do you eat the cookie?”
“You worship Mary”
“Catholics support pedophilia”
“Catholics are not Christians.”
“There is no need to go to church everyday. That’s what Sunday is for.”
“You worship the Saints”
“Priests wear dresses.”
“Infants don’t need to be Baptized.”
“I hate to go to Catholic weddings. They are too long.”

Or how about those who love to say when they wish to deny Catholic teaching about whatever it is–“Well, MY Bible says…”. What do they mean “Their” Bible? Did they write it’s books? Did they compile them? Did they interpret them from 33 AD onwards? If it weren’t so sad to hear people talk as if they, and they alone, have access to the Bible and what it means, it’d be laughable.

Somehow I don’t think that’s what Tim meant. God Bless. Memaw
I know. that’s my point.
It was uncharitable to assume that I would mis-use the Lord’s name.
I’ll just go back to over-using smileys.
:blackeye:

Ha! Exactly what my gripe is!

I’ve been lectured to be wannabes and dilettantes so many times. My IQ tests show me that statistically, I’m probably smarter than they are. I also have degrees in theology and political science, where I try to contribute to the Church. Yet those blowhards lecture me precisely on what I dedicate my life to.

Folks like you and I are caught in a bind. Do we have to stick our resumes in their faces? My goodness!

But I console myself remembering that people thought Jesus was a backwoods hick too. We carry the same Cross that our Lord did.

The way they constantly refer to the Church as the “Roman” Church or the “Roman Catholics”; it’s always a pejorative to associate the Church with pagan Rome.
I’m not sure that’s the case. Orthodox Lutherans and Anglicans will often use the term to specify that they’re talking about Catholics in communion with Rome, as opposed to those that they believe hold the Catholic Faith elsewhere.

“Why do you guys worship Mary?”

:doh2:

The mean well, though. I have to say, people think these things because we fail to catechize. So, I suppose, we shouldn’t be frustrated, but allow it to motivate us to evangelize with greater zeal. 👍

That we worship Mary or the saints. That one always gets me.

Can a Lutheran play too? 😃

When non-Christians use the “Didn’t Jesus love everyone?” line to advocate for homosexual “rights.”

When Protestants say that Roman Catholics worship Mary.

When Protestants think we Lutherans are Roman Catholic. Or when Roman Catholics lump ‘all those Protestants’ together (Basically, the “Paradoxy” subhead of this: touchstonemag.com/archives/article.php?id=11-03-014-f)

When people misunderstand - or worse, change the meaning of - the Lutheran practice of Sola Scriptura.

When Roman Catholics quote the Fathers as if Lutherans don’t also read and refer to them.

When people think we chose the name ‘Lutheran’ for ourselves, or that we follow the man.

When it is said that we believe that Catholics are not Christian.

When it is said that we believe the pope to be The Antichrist.

My personal pet pieves:

The pope is infallible
The Pope ALONE is infallible (at ANY time)
The Pope can unilaterally get rid of the liturgies of the Oriental and Eastern Catholic Churches.
The Pope is above an Ecumenical Council
The Pope has absolute authority (in ANY sense)
