Yesterday, was a blessed day. My son was baptized in the Catholic Church! 😃

The unfortunate thing that occured was that his Godfather did not show up to the baptism until the baptism was almost over. (This was due to his carelessness.) 😦

Luckily his brother was able to take his place during the ceremony.

The Baptism Certificate has the original Godfather’s name (the one who was extremely late).

Who is my son’s godfather?? The one whose name is on the certificate or his brother who stood in for him during the ceremony???

Any suggestions on how to handle this??

Thanks.

If you play this right it could work out to your son's advantage. Tell the origional Godfather he is responsible for supporting and encouraging his Godson every Christmas and Birthday ($$$). Tell the brother, since he stood in, he assumed the responsibility for his brother and he is responsible for supporting and encouraging his Godson every Christmas and Birthday ($$$). Either way your son wins.:D

First, congratulations on your son’s baptism!
When one of my brother’s children was baptised, the chosen Godfather could not make it to the ceremony (my brother and the Godfather are both firemen, and the Godfather had to work a shift during the ceremony). Our cousin stood in for him in the ceremony, but it was understood that he was simply a stand-in for the ceremony, and the one who had been chosen to be the Godfather was still the Godfather. He was not at the ceremony, but the obligations of Godparent were still his.

The person designated as Godfather. (the one who was extremely late).

His brother stood in for him as ā€œProxyā€. It is possible to Baptize with Godparent(s) on the other side of the country. Marriage I believe can also take place by Proxy.
