I was reading the typical ant-Catholic comments in a reply to an article on something related to the Church and one stood out in a suprising way. The person who wrote the comment was being critical of the Chruch’s stance on many issues related to abortion etc. The last sentence was:

“The Roman Catholic church is out of touch with the modern world.”

It made me smile a bit as I thought to myelf, “that’s kind of the whole point.” We are called to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not the gospel of modernity. The comment only served to validate the Chruch.

What say you?

The temptation that the Church always faces is to be too much in step with the world.

The Church should be as counter-cultural today as Christ was when He walked the earth.

So true! Whenever a parish is trying to be more worldly and less Catholic, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE 👍

I think it was Bishop Sheen who said that if we marry the current world, we will be widows in the next.

It is not the Church that has to get in step with the world. It is the world which has to get in step with the Church!

This is exactly why the Catholic Church olds so much appeal to me. If it was in touch with the modern world I would despair. ):

Sadly, I don’t think people actually realize what is the “modern world.” They approach “modernity” as reality of the human condition rather than looking towards nature. Nature says pain is a part of life. Nature says sex has the potential to lead to new life. Marriage is the public recognition of the family unit, which naturally begins through the commitment of a man and a woman. But no, according to modernity, pain is the result of lack of accesses to drugs, sex is simply pleasure, and marriage is only about two people, which can lead to a family through artificial insemination. We can even “choose” to deny the reality of body types and aging through cosmetic surgery. Why would someone accept his/her natural flaw when it can be changed with a few thousand dollars?

What woke me up to the mindlessness of our society was questioning the true source of human happiness. Even before the existence of modern luxuries such as toilets and microwaves, people had a reason to smile. Yet, our society tells us to pursue money and our career over all things in order to find happiness. We find true happiness through relationships, not stuff. Love is the source of human fulfillment, which is what encouraged me to further explore the “God is Love” concept which is so easily thrown around, without being understood. Our society and the Church teach completely different understandings of love, which is the heart of the reason why they are so different. While “modernity” only understands the heart as seen through our current time, the Church understands the heart as it exists throughout human existence, transcending it’s location in time and space.

I hope that over time the modern world will get more in touch with the Chruch.

Unfortunately it seems that for many of her members, and this has likely always been true, it’s the other way around.
