Adam-God was doctrine…until everyone saw how stupid it was, then it was NOT doctrine because it did not have “thus sayeth the Lord”.

But…but…the Doctrine and Covenants have many, many sections that do not say “thus sayeth the Lord” So, the Mormon responds that “well, the Doctrine and Covenants was declared by the First Presidency to come from God, so it is Doctrine”

Well, Mormons claim the black, racist ban was not doctrine…but…but…we have a quote from the First Presidency that the racist ban came straight from God…so the Mormon responds…“well, not everything that comes from God is Doctrine…”

So then the D&C is not necessarily doctrine…right? So the Mormon replies…“yes, they came from the Prophet…”

So then, Adam-God is doctrine because it came from a Prophet…" The Mormon say, "NO! Because it did not say “thus sayeth the Lord!”

And the circle continues…

it reminds me of a ditty my brother and I used to say when we were kids:

“you remind me of a man”

“what man?”

“A man with the power”

“What power?”:

“The Power of Voodoo”

“Who do?”

“You do”

“Do what?”

“remind me of a man”

“what man?”

“A man with the power”

“What power?”:

“The Power of Voodoo”

“Who do?”

“You do”

“Do what?”

“remind me of a man”

“what man?”

“A man with the power”

“What power?”:

“The Power of Voodoo”

“Who do?”

“You do”

“Do what?”

Kinda fun…but never answers any questions, never leads anywhere, and soon gets annoying.

Just like LDS apologetics…

It kind or reminds of that song by Dead or Alive, “You Spin Me Around

“You spin me right round, baby
right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round”

Bet that song is stuck on your brain now isn’t it…😛

Great start to a ‘debunk mormon myths’ thread, Sir Thomas More.

I have been “graced” with visits, and sought conversation with mormon ‘mishies’ in an effort to gauge their actual knowledge of their own theology, and of the knowledge they pretend to infuse upon those they visit. Invariably I find that they have nothing more than canned responses rather than in depth knowledge to any challenge they face. When the canned responses are exhausted they always retreat into the excuse that they will not respond to ‘arguments,’ or claim that you do not have the ‘right spirit’ to receive their teaching and leave.

Mormons ultimately cannot accept discussion of their beliefs because there is no logic or truth in them and they cannot allow contradiction that might disabuse them of something that risks cultural and family alienation.

The younger and more open generations, however, are becoming more skeptical and many have left the practice of the faith. I deal with a lot of them. Yet, they too seem to not want to subject their family to the pain an actual breaking away would cause them. The problem is that eventually many end up rejecting any religion whatsoever and become either agnostic or atheists.

The same thing happens with members of those other highly dogmatic and anti-Catholic religions, the SDA’s and JW’s

I think it is the utter absence of critical thinking that actually scares me about this sort of stuff.

I have A LOT of Mormon friends, going back decades. No SDA’s or JW’s, but lots of Mormons, which is fairly typical in California since we have more Mormons (and some would say more ACTIVE Mormons) than Utah. Some are very educated and accomplished, others not so much, and from what I’ve seen among the Mormon faithful, that’s fairly typical. Lots of educated, lots of not-so-educated ~ in other words, your basic mix of people. Not only are a lot of my Mormon friends highly intelligent and accomplished, the same can be said for many of the Mormons that post on this very forum. This is a mixed group for sure.

So I am sorry but I just DON’T GET how someone can buy into the entire Mormon story (although, it’s hard to know what that story is sometimes since it keeps changing) when it doesn’t stand up to the most basic critical scrutiny. Even things that were “doctrine” back when my first Mormon friend was in Seminary are no longer doctrine now. It makes you dizzy! It makes me grateful for the Catholic faith that has stayed the same!

One of the things that has stuck with me that my son said once is that the Catholic faith “made sense”. Yes, there is faith involved, but not the sort that requires one to set aside the sort of information that is required to believe in Mormonism, which has been proven false on a myriad of levels. Even critical inquiry is discouraged among Mormons. That makes me wary. It’s just SO OPPOSITE in the Catholic faith, where challenging and inquiry are welcomed, and I am glad about that!

LOL! Watch Bachelor and the Bobbiesoxer with Cary Grant and you will see this skit! Perfect analogy:p

Back to the OP ~ re: Adam-God. I was thinking about this during the 2nd reading today at Mass where St. Paul is speaking about Jesus:
Colossians 1:15-20
"15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
16 For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him.
17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
18 He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent.
19 For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell,
20 and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross (through him), whether those on earth or those in heaven.
Now, while I am not quoting from the King James Version of the Bible (the above is from the New American Bible) the meaning of this passage cannot be too different from one version of the Bible to another. And the first Mormons would have had this text, at least the King James Version, which completely blows the Adam-God doctrine out of the water and everything else about Adam and keys and all the rest.

So unless someone can show that somehow the “Joseph Smith Translation” of this passage is remarkably different, then the development of the Adam-God doctrine is utterly lacking in substance. I don’t have the suitable reference handy or I would look it up myself, but if someone has a Joseph Smith Translation handy, feel free to contribute.

Why do I bring this up? Because if it is in Mormon Scripture, one of the Standard Works, definitive proof that the Adam-God doctrine was false, then I think we have shown that Brigham Young was a false prophet using Mormon Scripture alone.

All of the LDS prophets are false prophets…there is just a whole lot more evidence against Joe and Brigham than the others

Blind faith denies the light of reason imparted upon us by God.

Unfortunately, when you try to point out that Mormonism has changed substantially and frequently, the Mormon likes to point out how the Church has “changed substantially and frequently,” often pointing out the superficial changes in the liturgy such as Latin to vernacular, or the promulgations of Papal Infallibility and the Marian Dogmas, without understanding what Dogma is to begin with.

Bingo!!! We have a winner!!!

Out of all of the rebuttals, discussions, debates, etc. that is one thing I have never heard a mormon say.

OK, but I get the prize, cuz that quote was originally from me.

So what did I win? 😃
