Prayer Found Under Christ’s Sepulchre 1503AD

(This prayer has been known for quite a while. He who wants or hears someone else read it or carries it on his person will not die suddenly, drown, burn, be poisoned or lose battle or be taken prisoner. During childbirth, a woman who reads or listens to someone else read the prayer, or carries it on her person will have a short labour. When the child is born, place the prayer on his or her right side and it will be preserved from evil. If you find anyone having a fit, put the prayer on his right side and he will recover. He who writes this prayer whether for himself of for another, I will bless him, says the Lord. When this prayer is placed in a home, that home will be preserved from lightning and thunder. He who reads it daily will be give a sign 3 days before his death.)

O God Almighty, who suffered death upon the Cross, particularly for my sins be with me.

Holy Cross of Jesus – have pity on me.
Holy Cross of Jesus – be my protector.
Holy Cross of Jesus – take away all bitter pains.
Holy Cross of Jesus – take away all evil.
Holy Cross of Jesus - let me walk in the way of salvation.

Preserve me from any temporal accidents; take away any danger of sudden death. I always adore the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus of Nazareth crucified, have pity on me; make the spirit of evil leave me for all times.

Oh, Mother of Perpetual Succour I come before thy sacred picture and with a child like conscience invoke thine aid. Show thyself a Mother to me now, Have pity on me.

Oh, dearest Mother of Perpetual Succour, for the love thou barest to Jesus and in honour of His Sacred wounds, help me in this my necessity (mention it).

Oh, Loving Mother I leave it all to Thee in the name of the Father, I leave it all to Thee in the name of the Son, I leave it all to the Thee in name of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN. AMEN.

NB: Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. Pray for us.
Repeat 3 times.

End of prayer

I know a number of women who have used this prayer when in labour, and all have had short labours. They all swear by it.Give it to anyone you know who is pregneant, or going to war, is in a dangerous job, is an epileptic or has an epileptic in the family. Put it in your car for protection.

“place this prayer on a person’s right side and he will recover from a fit”? Really? I should think calling in a doctor will do at least as much good as putting a piece of paper on their right side! Did Jesus cure the demoniac who had fits (or anybody else for that matter) by writing a prayer on a piece of paper and asking him to attach it to his side? Of course not.

Sounds about as believable as all the superstitions about avoiding black cats and the number 13, walking under ladders, throwing salt over the shoulder, breaking mirrors and the like.

God isn’t some sort of vending machine where if you perform certain actions in a ritualistic manner you will be guaranteed a particular result. To think in this manner of the Almighty puts a person at grave risk of the mortal sin of presumption (taking God’s grace for granted). We must ALWAYS pray as Jesus did - adding ‘thy will, NOT mine, be done’ and being prepared, as He was, to receive a negative answer, as He did to His prayer in Gethsemane.

Sure, praying is always worthwhile and there’s nothing wrong at all with the prayer in and of itself. But God will answer your prayers in His own way - and the answer can just as easily be ‘no’, or at least ‘not now’, as ‘yes’, no matter how many of these sorts of rituals you faithfully follow.

This prayer has nothing to do with superstition. It’s a prayer to almighty God!!! With MAry’s intercession. To equate this prayer with superstitious practices is ridiculous.

There are many example of graced devotions and prayers in the history of our church.

The proof is in the pudding, this prayer works. If you dont want to use it, then dont. But dont try to turn people off it who might benefit from it. As i said, in my experience, it has been effective with every woman I know having a short labour who has used it!!! (average is about 2 hours). Why would it work if it was not a prayer that carried the grace of God??

As for calling a doctor, yes i agree. Put the prayer on their side while you wait.

Of course Jesus didnt use a note: he didnt have to: He was Almighty God. I, on the other hand, am not God, and dont have the gift of casting out demons. so i’ll use and continue to use those devotions and prayers that work for me. Jesus did however bend down and write on the ground.

So let me get this straight: if I use this prayer, I am in grave danger of mortal sin?

“Use” the prayer? If by ‘use’ you mean pray it, which is the ‘use’, and the only use, that one is supposed to make of a prayer, then you will be doing well and rightly.

If by ‘use’ you mean carrying it written about one’s person as a species of amulet in the belief that the act of doing so offers some sort of protection additional to the praying of it - then is one not doing very similarly to many who carry a lucky rabbit’s foot or a 4-leaf clover about with them in the belief that such protects them from such types of ‘bad luck’ as illness or natural disaster?

Why would it work if not graced by God? Can you think of no-one else who is spiritually powerful who would like you to believe in them?

Adherents of every religion - Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, the various tribal faiths - claim all sorts of similar ‘miracles’ resulting from their own spiritual practices. As have adherents of demonstrably false apparitions among Catholics, apparitions which have been condemned by the Church. And many of those who carry the rabbit’s feet and 4 leaf clovers also claim that they are effective. By your logic all this false (or at least mistaken) faith must be graced by God as well, must it not?

Cannot the Devil appear as an angel of light? Did he not offer Jesus all the kingdoms of the world? And being prince of the world, surely he could deliver as well, if Jesus had chosen to succumb. Would he not be capable of offering all manner of other material benefits and advantages to those who were deceived into doing his work then?

So let me get this straight: if I use this prayer, I am in grave danger of mortal sin?
I don’t know about mortal sin, but you’re certainly in grave danger of being disappointed. Do you really think we can force God’s hand? “Nope, I said this prayer, now you can never let me drown, no matter what!”

This prayer is extremely beautiful and could be very efficacious. That being said, the beginning portion:
(This prayer has been known for quite a while. He who wants or hears someone else read it or carries it on his person will not die suddenly, drown, burn, be poisoned or lose battle or be taken prisoner. During childbirth, a woman who reads or listens to someone else read the prayer, or carries it on her person will have a short labour. is superstitious because it places faith in mere actions instead of faith in the Grace of God; putting a piece of paper in your home or in your pocket or what have you even if it has a prayer on it will provide no Grace to you or others, unless its presence is making you be more aware of God and you are actually praying the prayer. But even so, the Grace of God comes from the act of praying not from the mere presence of an object.

Take for example the phrase “Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire” Now, obviously I’m not going to be kept in a state of Grace just by wearing the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel I have to do the prayers prescribed with it and wear it in good faith and be ever mindful of Our Lord’s sacrifice and Our Lady’s intercession; it takes prayer.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

"Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition." (CCC 2111)

“Superstition is a departure from the worship that we give to the true God. It is manifested in idolatry, as well as in various forms of divination and magic.” (CCC 2138)

Its not superstition at all. Have you not heard of certain objects which when you carry them you recieve certain graces? (for example the grace of protection?) Do you class these as amulets? The miraculous medal is one example. The prayer of the Holy Speuilchre , I believe, is another.

Saint Catherine Labouré in an apparition, heard the virgin MAry say of the miraculous medal: “All who wear them will receive great graces.” So, the Mother of God said that simply by wearing a particular object, the wearer will recieve graces. Do you think that the mother of God, also promotes superstition and the use of amulets?

Sure the devil can immitate God, but why would he shorten someones labour, or protect someone in battle, or end an epileptic fit? These do not seem in charatcer for the devil . You have to look beyond your skepticism and actually use some discernment. Now what are the fruits of this prayer. (for it says in scripture that you will know a work of the devil by the fruits that accompany it). Does it cause in those who have used it discord, disharmony, depression, self indulgence, pride (or other such fruits of the devil?) In fact this prayer has brought peace, joy, and stronger faith, to all the people I know who have used it, a sure sign that this prayer is a work of God.

Are you proposing that this prayer, is a work of the devil? And if so, do you have any evidence whatsoever, meaning actual experience with this prayer, with which to draw such a conclusion?

Obviously you will never use it. But if I were going to war, I would certainly take it. (cant hurt right) This prayer does have a history, and a catholic leader of an army took this prayer into battle and was successsful with it. (I’m searching for a source, and will post when i find it).

Nobody’s trying to force Gods hand. If God gave us this prayer, how is using it forcing his hand? i cant speak on the battle part I can only witness to the pregnancy part. Every woman I know who has used it has had a short labour, and swears by it. MAny of these woman have had multiple children so they know what a normal labour is, and one that is very much out of the ordinary for them.

I can always tell when my sons do not have their scapular’s on. Their behavior and attitude tends to go downhill. Now you could say that is true about any kid, they have their moods and moments, but I know for a fact when they are acting like little punks, they are not wearing their scapulars.

When they keep them on, their behavior is much improved.

The scapular is, one presumes, a blessed object, as is the Miraculous Medal which I wear on occasion. In such cases it is the blessing the priest gives to the object, rather than the object itself, which imparts the graces.

There is always the danger with such practices of slipping into fetishism - failing to distinguish between the object itself (which is powerless) and the priestly blessing attached to it (which is powerful).

If the devil could give Jesus rulership over all the kingdoms of the world, then it stands to reason he could achieve less difficult feats like shortening labour or curing an epileptic fit.

Remember sometimes suffering is God’s will for us, and the means He provides for our sanctification, and sometimes to eliminate that suffering would actually be to frustrate His will. And yes, we often frustrate His will in this way by not embracing our crosses but avoiding taking them up.

Hence even when Jesus prayed earnestly for His cup of suffering to be taken away, it wasn’t. And when St Paul who suffered from some sort of ‘thorn in the flesh’ (physical burdening of suffering) prayed earnestly for it to be removed, similarly God’s response was no, because the suffering served His purpose.

And hence many saints even sought additional sufferings rather than praying for any to be removed. So yes, failing to embrace suffering and seeking physical ease and comfort is sometimes the work of the devil.

And again, what of all the Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists who swear by their amulets against the evil eye, their idolatrous images of and prayers to false Gods? Are these things also of God, since they are similarly efficacious? What, again, of the numerous false apparitions that have produced ‘fruits’ of alleged miracles but have been declared by the Church in her wisdom to be rotten to the core and unworthy of belief?
Are you proposing that this prayer, is a work of the devil? And if so, do you have any evidence whatsoever, meaning actual experience with this prayer, with which to draw such a conclusion?
I don’t need to be burned by fire or swallow arsenic to know that these things are dangerous - my own reason can tell me so. And my reason tells me that if you think words on a piece of paper can of themselves achieve anything, albeit they are the words of a prayer, then you are veering close to idolatry - making a piece of paper your god.

Of course prayer is a good thing - but use this prayer as it should be used, by praying it. Don’t write it down and presume that bit of writing will do anything.

Obviously you will never use it. But if I were going to war, I would certainly take it. (cant hurt right)
“Can’t hurt, right?” This, in itself, sounds superstitious.

Grace comes to us because of our interior disposition, not by what we carry with us. If one carries a blessed medal, then grace may arise from that if one’s interior disposition is displaced to receive it.

We receive Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament and, yet, still sin. Why would a prayer on a piece of paper guarantee what Christ Himself did not promise? I would think that a picture of the Sacred Heart would be much more profitable since we have Christ’s own promises to those who venerate it.

And my reason tells me that if you think words on a piece of paper can of themselves achieve anything, albeit they are the words of a prayer, then you are veering close to idolatry - making a piece of paper your god.

QUOTE]

Your basic premise is wrong, because nobody thinks words on a piece of paper, can of themselves achieve anything. Of course it is God who performs the miracle. Think outside the square a little.

Why put God in a box? Does God not have the power to grant miracles of grace any way He chooses? Must he consult your rule book or the churches rule book before he takes action?

A simple explanation is that 500 years ago, most people couldn’t read, so having the peice of paper would have been helpful.

Again I say that there is a way of discerning ‘miracles’ that are not of God: the fruits that accompany them. And the fruits of this prayer, in my personal experience, have all been positive.

The other thing is that prayer has been written about. I’m looking for sources. Will an impramatur satisfy you that the devotion is not the devils handywork?

The instructions actually say “he who carries it on his person” not he who says the prayer once. It’s like the scapular: where the promises apply if you wear it.

Sometimes sufferring is Gods will for us. I agree. but sometimes it isnt!! Jesus asked that the sufferring be taken away, and God said no. Therefore His will was known by prayer. Same with Paul. God wants to relieve us of pain in many instances. How many people did Jesus refuse to heal in the Gospels? Sometimes God says no, \but many times He says yes to healing. Now this prayer isnt always effective in shortening labour. In my experience God shortens labour dramatically in about 70-80% of cases. So God is God, and the prayer itself has no power, i agree with you there. It is God who has the power, and sometimes, he lets the person suffer through labour.

Couldn’t a Pater Noster be just as, if not more, effective?
