The most nasty thing I've seen on tv

there was a time when we had something called “Standards of Decency.” This kind of stuff is so wrong, so bad… and children can stumble upon it by accident. So can husbands, wives, ect. And no one sees this and is unaffected. I happened upon a girls gone wild commercial by mistake and just the few seconds blurb I saw burned an image in my brain I could not get rid of for weeks. I felt dirty- contaminated- for having seen it. It is awful that this stuff is out there for all to see.

When God is removed from culture- all sense of right and wrong goes right out the window. Anything (and I mean ANYTHING) is fair game and considered “just another alternative.”

You can say- Yes, but as the parent, it is YOUR job to keep your children away from such stuff. I try to do that. But I am only human- and my children are not in my sight 24 hours/day. My 17 year old son will be off to college in the fall- the dorms have cable. All his life I have not had cable- no MTV, etc, to shield him from the garbage out there. Now it will all be available. Hopefully I’ve raised him right. It’s just a shame our society doesn’t SUPPORT what parents are trying to do, but instead it THWARTS our efforts at every turn. No other generation had to contend with the total lack of societal support for any kind of public decency. In fact, anything moral is mocked and seen as “hatespeech” and “intolerant.” Do I want censorship? I want COMMON SENSE. And I am a Catholic and not ashamed of it (some would even say “Catholics have no right to talk about morality- you people molest children!” UGHHHHHH!!!)

Judie, I certainly sympathize with you. :hug1:
Your post is “all over the map” but I wanted to say that it is quite a challenge to raise children in our society. It’s obvious that we cannot shield them from everything…as much as we’d like to. They must learn about life, the reality of human existence, and going away to college is a marvelous experience and test.

I believe that there’s a balance…and the “forbidden fruit” aspect will take over unless we are consistent, and give a good example. (“do as I SAY…not as I do” is NOT an example of good parenting to me.) As someone said in an earlier post, our example is much more powerful than shielding our children’s eyes from everything. Our honesty is our best defense.

Honesty and knowledge from the Bible. Your children should know what God expects of them, and trust you to be their guides. Before leaving the home and going to college, or just going to a new job, children should be told frankly about what is waiting for them. The devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour. They will be surrounded by attractive people but must choose.

“Hey man, you want a hit of this joint? No? What’s wrong with you? Hey everybody, this guy (or girl) don’t know how to party!”

“Wanna hook up later? No? Then get away from me!”

“Hey, let’s all go down to the bar and get wasted! No? You’re no fun!”

But that’s the life being advertised on TV and in the movies. You party by smoking dope, taking pills or getting drunk. You have casual sexual encounters. If you want to be with a guy, you have sex first and ask questions later, or not.

As a follower of Jesus Christ find fellow believers and belong to a church. Involve yourself in the works that the Bible tells us to do. Pick people that share your beliefs and be a witness to those who don’t.

Avoid movies and TV shows that depict the examples I mentioned above as “normal” or “average” behavior. God wants what’s best for you. Meditating on the world by filling your mind with trash will distract you from doing that.

The “you molest children” idiotic insult is just crude, rude and ignorant…surely not even deserving of further mention.

It’s been a rough few weeks since the Pope made his remarks about the “one true church.” Our local papers have gone balistic, Catholic bashing run rampant. And even conversations at work have the tone of the above quote. As if it is child endangerment raising them in the Catholic Church. I’m emotionally exhausted!

As a local connection to what this post is about- a few weeks ago a toddler was sodomized by the family’s dog. I am not making this up. (the dog was a pit bull). Police and animal behavioralist were baffled by what would make a dog do this. The child had to have reconstructive surgery. Word is that some people TRAIN dogs to do this, for pornographic purposes. Apparently there is a market for this kind of stuff.

Believe me- I’m not just a “Do as I say, not as I do” kind of parent. I walk the walk. I’m just saddened at how hard the world makes raising a moral kid these days… Just venting:blush:

Hi Judie,
Do you live in the Buffalo area? It’s beyond shocking what you have recounted. I in no way was referring to you (or anyone else in this forum) as “do as I say” type parents. We all do our best.
I also don’t advocate a “head in the sand” attitude, but learning certain things in the news (IMO) does me no good, and potentially does harm to me and my family. I rarely if ever watch news on TV, and mostly keep my news reading down…especially when I’m in an emotionally exhausted state. I wish you well Judie. God bless you.

I do not have an antenna on my tv, nor do I have cable/satellite. I mostly go with DVD’s. There is even a point where the DVD’s are becoming fewer and fewer to rent or buy. Entertainment is becoming less and less wholesome. Just buy board games and entertain ourselves, the media won’t do that anymore.

I am posting this to warn parents. A lot of us don’t know what type of shows are shown late at night on FuseTV. The following is very sick and disturbing, but it is not an exaggeration. I really did see this on Fuse.

Since my hubby left for Afghanistan, I’ve had a horrible time sleeping. So, I lay on the couch late at night and flip aimless through the channels.

As I was going through the channels, I came across a woman in a skimpy bikini who was standing in front of a dog. I stopped because the dog looked vaguely like my brother’s boxer(or at least to my sleep deprived mind it did) I was curious about the dog.

The woman began to encourage the dog to smell and lick on her bikini. Surprised, I looked at the channel. I couldn’t help wonder if there was some kind of sick porn that had accidentaly shown up on regular cable.

It was fuse and the show was RadGirls.

The young lady, apparently, had on a meat bikini(I’m not making this up) I turned the channel quickly.

What the flip is going on here? Have we dropped so low in our society that boderline beastiality is now being shown on cable tv? I really am one of those people who think that if you don’t like something, you should get up and turn the channel. But this was sick. I mean who ever would this appeal to?

For the first time in my life I want to complain about a show. But i don’t know who to complain to or even if it would work. So, I am going to warn parents that you might want to block this channel

Gross. Was this a cable channel? It must have been because I can’t imagine network putting this on! However, Howard Stern’s show was awful, too. He and some other pig men would have women come out in bikinis and then rank them, usually telling them how awful they looked. It was and probably still is disgusting especially to women.

If it’s network, you should write to the network complaining and also to the advertisers. If it’s cable, you could complain to your cable provider, but since it’s a service you pay for, it probably would not make a difference.

On another note, I’m sorry for your insomnia and am praying for your husband and his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan and the rest of the world.

Yes- I do live in the Buffalo area. It is (or was) a very Catholic, immigrant population. Now that the third generation + later (of the original immigrants) have come of age, many have left the faith for non-denominational churches (which are growing rapidly here.) People feel very free to criticize the Church, which I guess what living in a free society is all about. Anyway- If you were referring to the dog episode- we were all shocked. It is still under investigation. I agree- the news is depressing and late-night TV is downright horrible. Best to avoid altogether!

I don’t consider myself a prude or an alarmist, but I am both offended and horrified by the direction the world is taking. Multimedia receives a large part of the blame.

The Internet is great fun and almost mind boggling to me. I love that I can get any type of information in a split second. But it just seems to me that the producers of multimedia gadgets want us all to be on the Internet all day, talk on our cell phone all day, take pictures all day, or listen to music and watch movies all day. Every new piece of technology is geared for this type of usage. We are being dumbed down at a staggering rate.

Couple all of the multimedia outlets and gadgets with the abundance of sexual images and inuendo and we have a world that is rapidly turning into Sodom.

It truly saddens me. Am I just speaking hyperbole?

I agree with you completely. It isn’t just television as you said. In fact, the other day, I turned on my car radio to hear the morning radio hosts talking about the most unusual places they had done something…I didn’t get it at first because I missed the first part of their show. They had callers ON THE AIR laughing and joking about the strangest place they had ever ‘pleasured’ themselves! Now, it’s true that school has not yet started up, so the kids may still be sleeping, but it was around 9 or 10 in the morning. Well, doesn’t really matter what time. Like you, I’m not a prude. I teach high school students, so I am used to quite a bit. However, is this what we want general conversation to be among our radio personalities? I remember when the Beatles first shocked America because their hair was long and now our radio hosts are encouraging people to brag on air about masturbatory experieinces! Anything for ratings, I suppose.

And that’s where the media is headed with nothing to guide them. Just keep turning that sex and perversion dial up until you hit Sodom and Gamorrah.

The radio in my car stays off except for one Catholic station.

I play the occasional CD.

I see maybe one or two movies a year. Usually something by PIXAR because they know how to tell a good story without being dirty.

Except for a few hours a week, no TV.

No cable, no satellite, no IPOD or IPHONE or Blackberry.

The internet is only for gathering info and the occasional forum, like this one.

I spend more time with friends and family.
