Lord Jesus, we believe you are our God who became man so that you might have a human heart, so that you might evoke in our hearts a corresponding love for you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in thee. Amen.
The historical origins of the devotion to the Sacred Heart and its doctrine go back to the dawn of Christianity. Devotion to the Sacred Heart was revealed to us by Jesus when He told us, in the only direct mandate he gave, to imitate Him, by telling us “Learn from me that I am meek and humble of Heart.” But the doctrinal foundation of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart was revealed on Calvary when the heart of Jesus was pierced by the soldier’s lance and we are told there flowed out blood and water.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a devotion that was promoted by our Lord Himself when He appeared to St. Margaret Mary in her convent chapel in Paray-le-Monial and showed her in a series of wonderful visions the riches of the love of His Sacred Heart. Devotion to the Sacred Heart reminds us of the astounding fact that Jesus Christ loves each of us and the entire world with an intense, burning love. Devotion to the Sacred Heart reminds us that this love of Christ has been rejected by the world at large, and, to a greater or lesser extent, by each one of us in particular. And devotion to the Sacred Heart invites, encourages, urges us to make up to the Savior for this rejection of His love by giving to Him our own souls through consecration, and by bringing other souls to Him through reparation.
We believe that Jesus Christ gave us Himself in the Holy Eucharist, by which He remains now on earth, in the fullness of his humanity and with his living human Heart. In every Mass, He freely offers Himself to his heavenly Father, and through the Mass confers the graces He won for us on the cross. In Holy Communion, we receive Him with his Heart into our own hearts, to sustain our selfless love of Him by our enduring love for everyone whom He places into our lives.
Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle
In all the events of life—
In disappointments,
In the thoughtlessness of others,
In the insincerity of those I trusted,
In the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.
Let me put myself aside,
To think of the happiness of others,
To hide my little pains and heartaches,
So that I may be the only one to suffer from them.
Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path. Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden or embitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable, that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow, haughty, and overbearing.
May no one be less good for having come within my influence, no one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble for having been a fellow traveler in our journey toward eternal life.
As I go my rounds from one distraction to another, let me whisper from time to time a word of love to You.
May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong in its purpose of sanctity. Amen.
