The mother who regrets having children

Clearly this woman is not mentally healthy. She pretty much captures the definition of psychopath.
That doesn’t necessarily make her bad, but it definitely makes her unwell.

Sad, really… 😦 She should have received mental healthcare for the sake of those kids.

Someone shared this story on facebook, and it made me so incredibly sad for that family, for those children. The person who posted it was agreeing with the author and has felt similar (non) feelings for her own son. Children are perceptive and know when their parent would rather them not be born. What a tremendous (and borderline abusive) burden to put on children.

So what should she have done? She could not help how she felt about her children. And despite how she felt about them she did her absolute best to be a great mother. There are parents that claim they love their children that donlt put the effort this woman did in.

Should have received mental healthcare or considered adoption.
This is a form of mental abuse on those children.

I was also thinking some personality disorder. Not sure if psychopath…my understanding of psychopath is someone who cannot understand right from wrong. (I’m not a psychologist) She understands that there was something lacking on her behalf.

I could not imagine forgetting my infant in front of a bakery. I remember vividly a nightmare I had when my oldest was about 4 days old. He was in his carseat on a school bus, on his way to school. I was running after the bus shouting, for it to stop.

At least she did go through the motions of caring for them. She didn’t seem to abuse them. She does seem to “love” them, she is now caring for her very ill adult daughter – she said she would give her right arm for her daughter to be healthy.

Yeah, I make no claim to diagnose… but clearly something that isn’t mentally “right”.

I was wondering about the same thing. It seems like a story that fills a page in a newspaper because it has a sensationalist undertone. 🤷
For a couple of decades now, I’ve seen articles about “non-traditional families.”

While I was in a waiting room at a doctor’s office some years back, I write an article that highlighted a handful of different families. There was the traditional family with two or three kids (I think they had three). Then there was a family that was more like the Brady bunch. They brought in kids from previous relationships and marriages and had decided to have one new baby on their own. There was one couple who claimed they loved each other, but were no longer in love with each other. They wanted to be there for their kids, though, so they mutually agreed to have an open relationship. They slept in seperate rooms and dated other people. Their intention was that when their youngest turned 18, they’d get a divorce. Then there was a couple who willfully decided not to have children and their article was about defending their choice to be childless. Then there was an article about a homosexual couple with adopted children. The purpose of the article seemed to be about “educating” people on the concept that “the family” exists beyond the traditional form and to legitimize these alternative choices.

My guess is that this article is along this line. Culturally, there is still a tendency to view married couples who willfully remain childless as selfish. Many people insist that once you have your own child, you’ll feel differently. My guess is that this article was to refute that claim. Thus by highlighting the idea that a woman can regret being a parent, it defends the notion that some couples may indeed have good reasons not to become parents.

I had a coworker who had kids and was very open about the fact that she regretted having children. The reality was, her kids were out of control teenagers. They were getting into legal trouble, cussed at her and ultimately did not respect her at all. From my conversations with her, she seemed to believe that getting angry and yelling at them was a form of discipline. She also seemed to be a bit of a helecopter parent. I think she was stressed out because she saw it as her job to fix their mistakes and bail them out of any trouble they got into. Thus she resented them because they didn’t appreciate all she did for them. She advised every woman in the facility to never get pregnant. She would go on about how desperately she wanted to be a mother before she had children and how terrible the reality of parenthood was. She openingly admitted that the reason she worked was to get away from her children.

I think a few things go into not enjoying parenting. First, there is having a bad attitude about it. A bad attitude can ruin anything you’re pursuing. If you’re engaging in negative self talk while doing an action, you won’t find the joy that might exist within that action. In a Christian sense, this can be about striving to do everything in love rather than merely going through the motions of it. The second thing can be in failing to take care of yourself. If you view life as being about finding fulfillment as exclusively satisfying wants and needs, when it comes to caring for your children, you may see your goal as satisfying their wants and needs exclusively. Basically you view yourself as a consumer and you view them as a consumer. If you’re busy spending all your time helping them to consume, then you have no time to consume yourself. As such, the children’s needs are perceived as an obsticle toward your own needs. If you can see that fulfillment is not merely just about consumming things to make you feel fulfilled, than it can be easier to recognize that in taking time out for yourself can also be good for your children. Not giving your kids everything they want is a good thing, and showing them that you’re not their servant is also another good lesson. Till you understand that life doesn’t revolve around your wants and need, you won’t understand that life also doesn’t revolve around your children.

Unforunately, we live in a world that teaches us that having children is like having a pet. You have one because you want one. Its a part of consuming. But whether she wanted a child or not in the beginning isn’t an issue because wanting a child does not guarentee that you will enjoy being a parent.

I do agree that she should have considered adoption. I also agree with another poster that she should have used things like daycare and worked out of the home. I think she tried too hard to be the perfect mom and that combined with her feelings did not help. I donlt think those children were abused in anyway though. She did her best.

How many women throughout history have felt the same as this woman but never actually voiced their feelings. Do we also condemn those women and feel sorry for their children?

I, for one, understand how she could feel this way and applaud her candor. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t thank God - in all His wisdom - for not “blessing” me with children, because I realize that I’m not cut out to be a mother. It took me six years into marriage(including two years of difficulty conceiving, and three miscarriages) to understand that not every woman is meant to be a mother.
Exactly this stuff is more common I think then people realize. Its just that most are afraid to to admit it. And given the reactions I see here and on the article its no wonder!

I agree with you that for some people not having children is a blessing. Sadly I think some people donlt realize this until they have already had kids. I think too many think things will change when its their own kids but that doesn’t always happen.

Maybe not those kids, in particular… but certainly a mother who is incapable of showing affection or love for her children is causing mental anguish in her children. Whether or not it’s on purpose doesn’t matter.

It sounds like she had PPD to me. She said she eventually came to love her son. When my firstborn was 5 days old I felt exhausted and had mild PPD. I didn’t form a strong attachment to him until he was around 4 months old. That didn’t mean I didn’t love him! I just wasn’t bonded yet, I took care of him and my body loved him while my brain learned how. Now he is my beautiful sweet little boy who is a dream to parent and I adore him.
This mama sounds like she tried so hard to be a perfect mother that she was never able to relax and enjoy it. Sometimes its better to put on a disney movie and eat popcorn and be lazy and snuggle your kids even if you know it’s not the ‘best’. I think it would have been better for this woman to go back to work. Daycares are not abuse and can be very enriching environments and if you are so miserable parenting that you regret having children, maybe a little every day break would be the best thing! I honestly think she would have enjoyed parenting more if she hadn’t tried to be so perfect despite hating it. I think she should have asked for help.
Exactly! You have to take care of yourself! Even if you try to be the perfect mom, chances are it’ll be more harmful anyway. By taking time out for yourself, you are teaching your children to respect the needs of others.

I say, God bless her! May her husband bless her for giving him the children he desired! May her children bless her for unselfishly cooperating in giving them life and loving them through her actions despite her feelings!
Yep despite her feelings this woman did her best! If anything the problem here isn’t that she regrets having kids. its that she tried too hard to be the perfect mom. But judging by her comment at the end of the article I think she now realizes that.

It’s one thing to have these feelings–it’s another thing to publish them for all the world to see and while your children are still living. I feel so sorry for her kids having to read this. I would be absolutely traumatized if I read these words written by my mother

If I read this by my mother, I would be surprised she hadn’t enjoyed raising my younger sisters, but I would not be in the least surprised to learn she hated having me, nor would it affect me.

and because what is on the internet exists forever, they WILL read her words. Just imagine.

As a matter of fact, she may end up getting her wish not to have children. They may disown HER.

😦

Edited: Sorry, I thought this woman had younger children. I do suspect her declared lack of love for them will come as no surprise to either of her children. Very narcissistic.

That is right. I do think there are more women today that feel the way she does, just like I think a lot of men in the past might have been happy to not have kids, so I don’t think she is a terrible person for wanting to give her husband children of her own; however, I just cannot see a good reason for making her feelings public. She could have started a support group that her children never needed to know about if she wanted to share her feelings.

Actually, my wife left and two of our kids were 11 and 13 at the time. They’d had no clue there was any problem and were shocked at the news we were separating. They were even further shocked by the actions their mother subsequently took to distance herself from them. The biggest challenge for my daughter hasn’t been dealing with now, how she perceives her mother’s feelings for her currently, it’s been coming to grips with the past, a quote she really relates to:

“People say that bad memories cause the most pain, but actually it’s the good ones that drive you insane.” anonymous

Her memories of her mother are of a woman she thought truly loved her. Was it pretend? Was it an act? Even though her mother only moved a few miles away and visits them regularly- in some ways she prefers to think of her mother as dead. For the mother that truly loved her to have died, that means at one time she existed.

Again, one of the insidious affects of depression is a distortion of memory. The inability to process positive thoughts about anything, including themselves, extends to the past. Which means that this woman’s memory of how she felt (and therefore acted) towards her kids may be different than reality. So, it is entirely possible she was a loving mother and her kids wouldn’t have gotten the impression or feeling they were unwanted or unloved.

And she may actually have been a great mom, but always been hyper-critical of herself. Anything less than ‘perfection’’, whatever that is- to her was a complete failure.

I bet she was a good mom and took very good care of them. She doesn’t look unhappy in the pictures, so why not let her children believe that actually had deeply loved them, even if she didn’t truly feel that why? Again I have no problem of her feeling that way, or how show took care of them, it is the telling them and the world that seems so hurt full, IMO.
