This is basically a one-off thread. I’d just like to give here the gospel reading for Holy Thursday and Good Friday in the Spanish Mozarabic Rite, which is actually a combination of all four passion narratives. (This was a common feature of the related ancient Gallican family of liturgical rites.) There isn’t much to see, but the way the different accounts are harmonized together into one might be of interest to some. Those who know Latin might note also that the wording of the text differs from the Latin Vulgate in places. (Does it preserve a Vetus Latina translation?)

FERIA QUINTA IN CENA DOMINI

Lectio sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam.

In diebus illis: venit dies pasche: in quo oportebat immolari pascha. Et misit Jesus duos ex discipulis suis: Petrum & Johannem: dicens eis. Euntes parate nobis pascha: ut manducemus. (Luke 22:7-22) In those days came the day of the Passover, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And Jesus sent two of his disciples [Mark 14:13], Peter and John, saying to them, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” And they said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters; and entering the door, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover with you. [Matthew 26:18] Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there prepare for us.” And the disciples went, came into the city [Mark 14:16], and found it just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

When it was evening [Matthew 26:20], Jesus reclined at table, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you that from this time I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And he taken a cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” [Matthew 26 :29] And taking bread, giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is handed over for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise after supper, taking the cup, he gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.” [Matthew 26 :28]

(John 13:1, 3-19, 21) But knowing that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. And knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, He rose from supper, and laid aside his clothes. And taking a towel, he tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He then came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not the feet only but also the hands and the head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” For he knew who was to hand him over; therefore he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

Then after he had washed their feet and put on his clothes, reclining again, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Amen, amen, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his Lord, nor is an apostle greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘He who ate bread with me will lift up his heel against me.’ I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. But behold, the hand of him who hands me over is with me on the table, and the Son of Man goes as it has been determined. [Luke 23:22] But alas to that man by whom the Son of Man is handed over! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born. [Matthew 26:24] Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will hand me over.”

(John 13:22-30) And the disciples were troubled. They looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. Now there was reclining at Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom he loved very much, so Simon Peter motioned to him and says to him, “Who is it that he was speaking of?” He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Scarioth. And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Now no person at the table knew why he said this to him. For some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. Judas, who would hand him over, answered, saying, “Is it I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said so.” [Matthew 26:25] And after receiving the morsel, he went out immediately. Now it was night.

(Matthew 26:31-46) When he therefore had gone out, [John 13:31] Jesus rose from supper with his disciples: and a hymn being said, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, [Mark 14:30] “You will all be scandalized in me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen up again, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter answered and said to him, “Though they all be scandalized in you, I will never be scandalized, because I am ready to go both to prison and to death [Luke 22 :33], and I will I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? [John 13 :37-38] Amen, I tell you, that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” But he spoke the more vehemently [Mark 14:31], saying, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said likewise.

Then Jesus went with them to a country-place called Gethsemani, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he says to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch.” And he was withdrawn away from them a stone’s throw; and kneeling down, [Luke 22:41] he fell on his face upon the ground [Mark 14:35], praying and saying, “Father, all things are possible to you; [Mark 14:36] if you will, take this cup away from me; [Luke 22:42] nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? [Mark 14: 37] Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” Rising up from prayer, he comes to his disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow, [Luke 22:45] for their eyes were heavy, and they did not know what to answer. [Mark 14:40] And leaving them again, he went away for the third time and prayed. And lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you.” [John 17:1] And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him; and his sweat became like drops of blood flowing down to the ground. [Luke 22:43-44]

Then he comes to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest now. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is handed over into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; behold, he who hands me over is at hand.”

(John 18:1-10) And he went out with them across the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, which he entered and his disciples. And Judas, who handed him over, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. Judas therefore went there, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now he had given them a sign, saying, “Whoever I will kiss, that is he; seize him [Matthew 26:47-48] and lead him away.” [Mark 14:44] Then Jesus, knowing all that would come upon him, said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am he.” And Judas also, who handed him over, was standing with them. As soon therefore as he had said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground. He asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you; I am he.” Judas came near to him and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Why have you come, friend? [Matthew 26:49-50] Judas, would you hand the Son of Man over with a kiss? [Luke 22:48] If you seek me, let them go.” That the word might be fulfilled which he said: “Of those whom you have given me I have not lost anyone.”

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. [Luke 22:50] So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into the sheath; for all who do work by the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot ask my Father, and he would send me, even now, more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” [Matthew 26:52-54] And the Lord, touching the servant’s ear, healed him. Then he said to those who had come to him, “Have you come as against a robber, with swords and clubs [Luke 22:51-52] to capture me? I was with you daily in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. [Mark 14:48-49] But this is your hour, and the power of darkness. [Luke 22:53] All this has happened that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” [Matthew 26:56]
 
As you can see, the gospel reading for Holy Thursday alone is quite of some length. 😛

(John 18:12-23) So the band of soldiers and the tribune and the ministers of the Jews captured Jesus and bound him. And they led him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiphas, who was pontiff of that year. Now it was Caiphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. Then all the disciples, leaving Jesus, fled. [Matthew 26:56] And a young man followed him, wearing a linen cloth over his naked body. And they seized him, but he, casting off the linen cloth, fled naked. [Mark 14:51-52]

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and another disciple. And that disciple was known to the pontiff, and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the pontiff. But Peter stood outside at the door. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the pontiff, had went out, and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. The girl therefore who was doorkeeper says to Peter, “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” Now the servants and ministers stood at a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. Now with them was Peter also, standing and warming himself.

The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. Jesus answered, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where all Jews meet together, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you question me? Question those who have heard what I have spoken to them. Behold, they know what I said.” And when he had said these things, one of the ministers standing by hit Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the pontiff?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, give testimony about the evil; but if right, why do you hit me?”

Then the high priest, standing up in the midst, said to Jesus, “Do you have no answer to the things that are brought against you by these?” But he was silent and gave no answer. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. (John 18:25-27) Now Peter was below in the courtyard, and the bystanders said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples? For even your manner of speaking reveals you.” Again he denied it with an oath [Matthew 26:73, 72], saying, “I have never seen him.” And after an interval of about an hour, [Luke 22:59] one of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” [John 18:26-27] Then Peter began to invoke a curse and to swear that he had not known the man [Matthew 26:74], and at once a rooster crowed. (John 19:31-35) Then the Jews, because it was the pure feast, that the bodies might not remain the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first, and likewise of the other who was crucified along with him. But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; instead, one of the soldiers pricked his side with a spear, and immediately there went out blood and water. And he who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. And we believe that it is true, that believing, you may have life in his name.

Gospel

Then Pilate commanded the body to be released. And Joseph, taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and went away.

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate, saying, “Lord, we have remembered that that seducer said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ Therefore command the sepulcher to be guarded up to the third day, lest perhaps his disciples may come by night and steal him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ and this last error would be worse than the first.” Pilate says to them, “You have guards; go, guard it as you know how.” Then they, departing, made the sepulcher secure, sealing the stone, with guards.
 
Final note before we end: this version of the gospel reading is taken from the old Mozarabic Missal (the Missale Mixtum). The revised missal now follows a two-year cycle; hence has some different readings when compared to the old rite. There is now also some differences between the texts of the readings between the old and the new versions, as the new missal follows the Nova Vulgata. To complicate things, the version of the passion found in the Missale Mixtum is also different from the Good Friday Passio Domini nostri Ihesu XRI et salbatorem secundum carnem given in an 11th century Hispanic lectionary known as the Liber Comicus, the main difference being that the version found in the Liber Comicus is a little longer. But that’s for another time. For now, a blessed Holy Week to everyone of you.
