A cloth was also employed in the older rites- it was commonly attached to the altar rail (but not held by the acolytes/altar boys). It can be seen here held by two altar boys on either of the (schismatic) bishop:

In medieval english usuage the cloth was longer extending to the ends of the lines of communicants and was known as the ‘houseling’ cloth.
