What a completely depressing ending to a fantastic novel! The end leaves us with pure nihilism, endorsing of animal passions, and the unbreakable inability to discern any absolute truth in the universe (other that naturalism of course), and to top it off- the end of the Catholic Church to hold men back from fulfilling a natural happiness in life. I was in love with this novel until the very end. How disappointing.😦

Same with Island of The Day Before. Some pretty cool concepts but terrible ending.

I’m not sure I follow your meaning. Do you mean the fire, when the library burns down, or the postscript in which Adso describes his attempts to piece together the fragments of manuscripts he recovered from the ruined building? In either case, I really don’t see what you’re objecting to. I thought it was a very effective and dramatic climax to the story, although by the time I read the novel I’d already seen the film, so I knew how it was going to end.
 
I read it about 25 years ago, and I remember being disappointed with it as well, considering the reputation it had as a must read.
 
I have seen the movie and it was pretty good. I have wanted to read the book, but haven’t had time.
