Hi

I’ve often wondered why the chief priests and elders needed Judas in order to capture Jesus? I mean surely they knew what he looked like. Why would they need someone to go and point him out and betray Jesus with a kiss?

Thanks.

:twocents:

He was hard to catch:
John 10:39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.
Luke 4:30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
John 7:30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 8:59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

It also offered Judas an opportunity to choose between Jesus and whatever else he thought he was doing.

Jesus by then commanded a following and was attracting more. Arresting Him in the open was very risky since there is the possibility that His followers and sympathizers might stir up a riot, so they needed to catch Him in private, when there was no one around.

It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”

…] Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.

My opinion and my opinion only, the “chief priests and elders” needed a scapegoat to blame it on if it blew up in their face, so to speak, since they were not up to charging Jesus on the up and up.

They knew that they were in the wrong so they hid behind others to do what they did.

Judas was needed since the “religious leaders” were afraid.
