Mary is the new Eve. She is the mother of the new peoples: The people who are brought to God through His Son; she is mother of the Church. We see this in the woman of Revelation, in the account of the punishment of Eve and the serpent, in the Crucifixion scene as told by John. I do not have the specific verses at this moment, but they are easily identifiable. If someone hasn’t given them by the time I get back from Mass, I’ll try to find them for you.

Hi zarthan,
Mary is indeed the new Eve. Her acceptance of God as the new “Ark of the Covenant” (the vessel whom God chose to carry His Son) is in stark contrast to the disobedience of Eve in the Garden of Eden.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

Pope Paul VI explicitly proclaimed Mary Mother of the Church and asked that she honoured and invoked with this title by all the Christian people

“The title ‘Mother of the Church’ reflects the deep conviction of the Christian faithful, who see in Mary not only the mother of the person of Christ, but also of the faithful. She who is recognized as mother of salvation, life and grace, mother of the saved and mother of the living, is rightly proclaimed Mother of the Church.”

Thank you, Colmcille. Now, would it offend you if the scriptures seem to say something else? Was not the first Eve made to be a helpmate of the first Adam? So would it not seem likely that the new spiritual Adam has a spiritual helpmate? Is not the church the bride of Christ? Ephesians 5:25-32.

God Bless.

Thank you for your response. Now what does the apostle Paul mean when he says that heavenly Jerusalem is our mother? Gal.5:26. In other words, heavenly Jerusalem is the spiritual mother of the apostle Paul and all the apostles, and prophets, old testament patriarchs, including Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, St. Francis, St. Therese, etc. and even the Virgin Mary. Gal.5:28-29. “Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise. But just as then the child of the flesh persecuted the child of the spirit it is the same now.”

And, Hebrews 12:22-25. “No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,…and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, …and the spirits of the just made perfect…”

Now, I can accept the fact that Mary is the mother of our faith, even as Abraham is the father of our faith. Both Abraham and Mary believed in the impossible as it was revealed to them. Yet, heavenly Jerusalem is their spiritual mother.

Hi zarthan,
Thank you for your reply.
May I draw your attention to articles 487 to 511 of the CCC. There is no conflict in Scripture as to the place that Mary holds.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

It is a complex mystery, no doubt. Mary is the Spouse of the HS, and the HS is the Soul of the Church. The Church is, indeed, the Bride of Christ.

Rev 12
12:1 And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars;
2 and she was with child; and she crieth out, travailing in birth, and in pain to be delivered.
…and the dragon standeth before the woman that is about to be delivered, that when she is delivered he may devour her child.
5 And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.
…
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast down to the earth, he persecuted the woman that brought forth the man (child).
…
17 And the dragon waxed wroth with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, that keep the commandments of God, and hold the testimony of Jesus:

Christians are the “seed” of the woman, in one sense, that “woman” is the Church, but we are also the “seed” of the Mother of Him whose commandments we keep.

Apocalyptic literature tends to be multilayer and multivalent in this way. For Catholics, the answer is most often “both/and” rather than “either/or”.

Mary plays a role in our redemption in the same sense that Eve played a role in our fall. Does that help, OP?

Yes, it helps to explain allegorical or symbolic contrasts between Eve’s disobedience and Mary’s obedience. We would do well to see the allegorical contrast of how Eve and Adam brought about the fall of creation, and how the new Eve and the new Adam, that is, the Bride of Christ and our Lord Jesus Christ will bring about the new creation:

Romans 8:19 “For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.”
