A retreat like that could really light a fire!! I will be sure to suggest it to our parish priest. thanks…🙂

Regarding the New Evangelization document–

ewtn.com/new_evangelizat…o_millennio.htm

–I skipped down to the concluding paragraphs, and it seems to me that the Holy Father’s desire was for people to:
  1. have a personal encounter with the risen Christ, then
  2. go back and tell others about Him.
It sounds simple, but maybe that is key to an effective evangelization?

any other insights would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Another thing that I think is key to evangelization is genuine holiness. St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the Gospel always; when necessary, use words.” Undoubtedly we live in a time when words are often necessary to spread the Gospel. Very few people will be responsive to our words, however, if we do not live lives of genuine holiness. If our lives are holy, people will see that we truly believe what we say, and that will give our message authenticity. In addition, I firmly believe that the world is seeking holiness, even though it doesn’t realize it. Because the world unknowingly longs for holiness, our holiness will be attractive in itself to all those who are genuinely searching for something good, true, and beautiful.

How can we effectively evangelize our Catholic faith?

I personally had a very long struggle with my conversion to RCC, but I have such incredible peace now that I am here. I feel sorry that others can’t or won’t understand the beauty of the fullness of the faith.
any ideas?

Evangelization is nothing other than sharing and teaching the Gospel.

Like the Pope said, holiness is primary. He outlined the sacraments and daily mass as essential to holiness.

Next:
To evangelize, we must know the basics of the faith. We must know the basics of the Gospel that the apostles taught and preached.
But, to understand the Gospel, we must go beyond just the scriptures. We must understand the full Gospel is the entire teaching the apostles taught and preached. Because they received the full Gospel from Jesus and the Holy Spirit in teachings that were not written in scripture.
The Gospel the apostles taught and preached was not written and summarized anywhere in scripture. There is no chapter which claims to have a summary of all the taught an preached. But, it was handed down to their successors, the bishops of the Church in union with the Pope. The early Christians knew this Gospel. The early Church Fathers are witnesses to this Gospel that the apostles taught and preached. And this early Church taught it to their successors. It was always taught in a fundamental and systematic way. The apostles always taught the Gospel in a fundamental and systematic way. This teaching, (called catechesis) was taught in the form of explaining the articles of the creed, the sacraments, the commandments and prayer. In other words, the Gospel taught by the apostles, that is, handed down in Tradition, was taught by explaining the parts of the creed, sacraments, commandments and prayer. Thus, after the first part of evangelizatin, i.e, explaining how God sent His Son to save us from all that oppresses us, especially sin and the evil one and how through Jesus we can have a right to heaven, then we must get into teaching the Gospel the apostles handed down.
That can only be done through catechesis, teaching the creed, sacraments, commandments and prayer.** All the early Christians knew these teachings, because this was the Gospel the apostles taught and preached. **
The Church teaches:
**105 Catechesis is nothing other than the process of transmitting the Gospel, as the Christian community has received it, (from the apostles) understands it, celebrates it, lives it and communicates it in many ways. ****131 In local catechisms, the Church communicates the Gospel in a manner accessible to the human person so that it may be really perceived as the “Good News” of salvation. **
(from the General Directory for Catechesis)

So, in local catechisms, such as the Baltimore Catechism, the basic teachings of the Gospel that the apostles taught and preached are handed down. Thus as the General Directory for Catechesis says, " For this reason, it is an act of tradition."
Yet, some of these teachings are written partially in scripture. Thus, we must also use scripture as a witness to these teachings, and to illuminate these teachings. And since it is a living Gospel, we must use the teachings of the Popes of our times, in which the Gospel is addressed to the problems and situations of our current times. Thus, all three, the** magisterium, scripture and apostolic tradition all together make up the Gospel that we should evangelize. **

Magdalisa,

It appears we were talking about different Popes!! I was reflecting on Ratzinger’s letter entitled “The New Evangelization.” ewtn.com/new_evangelization/Ratzinger.htm
I’m sure JP II’s Novo Millennio Ineunte is an excellent read.

It’s interesting that you mentioned a personal encounter with Christ. In Ratzinger’s Introduction to Christianity he stress that Love demands a relationship. Basically stated, God is Love. The Root of Love is charity. Charity is giving without receiving or self sacrifice. Therefore, we need to love or freely give to one another. Encountering Christ is building a charitable relationship with Christ.

Wold you like to examine Pope B XVI (Ratzinger’s) letter in more depth? It’s own EWTN.com. Click on Faith, then mini web site. Next click on The New Evangelization then introduction. You will see both Pope’s letters.

So basically I need to live a holy life, learn the teachings of the Church, study scripture & the Catechism. sort of what I have been trying to do for the past 15 years or so…come to think of it, the Catholics in my life that were/are doing those things are the reason I was drawn to this Church!! Evangelism must be a natural occurrence that happens when we really embrace our faith.

Thank you for your insights.

Texas, thank you for that link… yes, I guess we were talking about two different documents 🙂 I think you mentioned that the Holy Father had stressed the need for humility when approaching evangelization – that does sound like something Pope Benedict XVI would write! – I look forward to reading his document.

I also just discovered that you can search these forums and find similar threads. I did a search on “evangelization” and it came up with a whole page of links to other discussions on this topic. fun!

YES ! …
take the next step on The New Living Path (Heb. 10: 20. by WILLINGLY doing what St. Paul begs us to do… .
**"And now, brothers, I beg you through thr mercies of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, your spiritual worship. " ** ( Rom. 12: 1 )

Do this from now on every time you celebrate the Eucharist.

WILL THIS…
as the Priest invites to "Lift up our hearts to the Lord…"

and from this Fountain of all Holiness …Look for the PROMPTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT in your daily life.

You will be OVERJOYED at the leadings, revelations, and evangelistic opportunities He brings to you !
