The New Catholic
With hundreds of thousands of Catholics expected to flock to Germany in August for World Youth Day, we brought together five young Catholics to talk about female priests, abortion, birth control, homosexuality, and what Pope Benedict XVI must do to inspire the next generation.

“If the church were to do more to appeal to us, revitalization would come from my generation.”

The youth should be given a chance to stand out more in the church.

“I know if I had the chance, I’d become a priest. It’s unfair that I can’t.”

" I would love women to be priests, and I would love priests to be able to marry and have children."

" Other Christian religions allow marriage [for clergy], and this is one issue I would like to see the church consider."

“I understand historically why ordination of women hasn’t happened yet, but women are equally capable.”

"The way I see it, the church sees more in a man than a woman, "

“Birth control should be allowed, because young people are having sex and there are diseases you don’t want them to get.”

"I am prochoice. I feel every woman should be entitled to that choice. "

"Birth control is needed. "

“One issue I wish that the Catholic faith were a little more open is being gay.”

" I’m for gay rights and things of that nature. This is one area where I don’t agree with the church 100 percent."

“The contemporary one, which is later at night and reaches out more to youth, is far better attended.”

This is the net result of the Church in America, and other places as well, refusing to catechize or hold responsible those who catechize the young.
Ignorance begets ignorance and the popular culture becomes the default opinion.
The USCCB demotes the Assumption from a Holy Day because it falls on a Monday. We can’t expect Catholics to attend Mass two days in a row! That’s demanding too much.
Their parents don’t know anything because they weren’t catechized either.
There are bright rays of hope, but there are also dismal examples like this.
Pray.
Hard.

I think there is another phenomenon at work, the young are young, they are not mature, they are gorwing into it – and for the Boston Globe to “pretend” it is seeking information about the type of person atending WYD is in my mind another of their “hypocritical” stances on the Catholic church. Give the kids time and proper catechesis, they will come along. Their statements indicate that much work is needed and a system for keeping them in the church while that process occurs is paramount. And if I’m not supposed to perceive that they were “crefully selected” by the paper, well what can I say? Things are just a little different in Massachusetts these days.

Good point. Any major US newspaper would vet the “random” young people for an article like that.
As for the rest of it, yes, they are young, but not all young people are like those interviewed. Let’s just agree that the “fix was in.”

I wonder how many of these kids are actually going to World Youth Day - probably zero. Asking the Boston globle to do am honest piece about Catholcism is like asking Al Gazerra to do an honest piece about Judaisml. They are only going to interview dissenters and those who are secularists and catholic by name only. These kids obviously no very littel of the why’s of church teaching but I am sure these same kids could tell you all about MTV and their heroes like Paris Hilton and Company. Ask these same kids about the saints of the church or why the church teaches things and their Jaws willl drop. They obvuously choose the least cathechized catholic they could find and threw it out like hey this is how all catholic really think.
