I wish i could alter it, but can no longer do so!
You wouldn’t know it, but I was actually top speller out of all classes in primary until I was knocked out with the word centre, I spelled it ‘center’ and since then have always seemed to have difficulty with those last two letters - maybe I should have been born in the USA!!

Getting back to the topic, you raise an *EXCELLENT * point – that is exactly the problem! When was the last time that the *faithful * were consulted about anything?
Whenever there’s a new project, all hands seek our pockets, yet are we ever consulted? Are we ever asked if we want a new cathedral to look like an old stately cathedral or like one from out of Star Wars?
Does anyone ask the faithful if we would prefer our church’s Stations of the Cross to look like this…

That station reminds me of the “Crucifix” at St. Mark’s, the student Catholic church of UC Santa Barbara.

Compared to that the new Cathedral looks great.
But anyway, despite the modern design of the Oakland Cathedral, there is one aspect about it that I think all future Catholic cathedrals should imitate - the free health care clinic. The cathedral is supposed to be the Catholic center of the area. How fortunate it is for parishoners to have Christ present both in the Blessed Sacrament and within the least of the least who come to the Church for refuge.

It seems nice to me however it does seem a little plain, I have been in many churches and despite its architecture, I still consider it the house of the Lord, because that is a place of worship.
I think one thing that most people forget is that we are blessed to have places that are beautiful to worship in and it is really not about that design is about us having heart and soul to go to church to start with, I don’t know what anyone else thinks, but sometimes is not about what something looks like permitting that is up to code, as long as we are faithful and we do our part to attend Mass and set an example for others who are not going to church at all.**

Why is it that so many new churches like this, despite their grandiose proportions (i.e. Ave Maria, Florida) never include bells or a bell tower? Even the ugliest modernistic concrete churches of central European countries like Switzerland or Germany have a tower containing several cast bells, which, mind you, may be motorized but never electronically simulated! Are we Americans too advanced for such things, since we all have watches and car clocks? Are we afraid to annoy the neighbors (while the fire department doesn’t hesitate to use their sirens)?

From the video, it looks beautiful. While I find medieval-style cathedrals and churches lovely, I don’t find them conducive to prayer (for me – I realize everyone is different).

I suspect a lot of people, good and faithful Catholics would say something similar about the Incarnation itself: “nice but a little plain.” The test of the new Cathedral is whether it facilitates worship or not, and from what I have seen, it does. I am especially struck by today’s first reading because of its emphasis on the fact that we (both individually and corporately) are called to be living temples of God: we are the real cathedrals, the real houses of worship and buildings can only provide space and time for us to come together to worship and become the living stones/temples we are caled to be. That said, the new Cathedral serves its purpose well. The symbolism is clear and prevalent, and yet, it is the people of God who come here that are its real lifeblood and “decoration.”
Again, the cathedral of Christ the Light is amazing for its use of light and other fundamental realities which reflect the mystery of God. It is a worship space worthy of God for that very reason. It is a place where worship is facilitated and the building of the Kingdom of God a reality. It is a worship space worthy of God for that reason as well. Finally, despite its fundamental beauty and symbolism, it is its worshippping community itself which is the most striking thing about it, and that is as it should be: it is empty without them (it is “nice and a little plain” without its living stones; with them it is another matter). It is made FOR the living Temple of God we are called to be and works to underscore that need to complete it: another reason the Cathedral is worthy of God and a place of incredible mystery.

That looks like the embodiment of the spirit of dissent and heterodoxy that we’ve had for the last 40 years (especially in the Bay Area). Will the first service there be a clown mass?
It looks like a roller coaster ride. I don’t know if that’s on purpose or not - is the model supposed to be that the faith is like a roller coaster?
It says it’s made of wood and glass. I wouldn’t want to be inside there when an earthquake hits. I’m surprised they were able to get it approved - it doesn’t look safe. It looks like the “Crystal Cathedral” by Disneyland (Robert Schuller “Hour of Power” ministry). Why the Catholic Church would want to copy the design of a marginal protestant church is beyond me. $190 for this? I’m glad St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Patrick’s in New York weren’t designed by these “award-winning” architects.

Something truly appalling - Los Angeles Cathedral

LOL, the LA Cathedral does look awful on the outside, but on the inside, it’s not too shabby. The tapestries make a big difference. The outer design of the Oakland Cathedral looks a little better stylistically than the LA Cathedral.
The insides of both are OK. St. Patrick’s Cathedral’s interior looks more cozy and religious.

It looks nothing like the Crystal Cathedral. I grew up in the same city as the Crystal Cathedral (not the same city Disneyland is in) and never thought of it when seeing this new cathedral. The only real similarity is that they are both glass.
