The O antiphons! How beautiful!

I am preparing my Sunday school lesson for tomorrow. It’s the last class before our Christmas break. A lot of classes are having Christmas parties, but I decided to do a Gaudete Party–for Gaudete Sunday.

Monday begins the O Antiphons. A couple of years ago, a dynamic priest of our parish mentioned these in a talk–new to me (I’m always learning). So, I decided to investigate it for my Sunday school class.

I am blown away! How beautiful a meditation/liturgical practice.

And, I never realized that the Advent hymn “O Come o Come Emmanuel” is actually a hymn of the O Antiphons

I’m planning to meditate on these antiphons starting Monday December 17. And, I plan to do some little activities for my own children around them.

*Sadly though, we are expecting 6-10 inches of snow tonight–and 40 mph blowing winds tomorrow morning. So, I am sure that my Sunday school class will be cancelled. *

So my 3rd graders will probably miss this lesson.

I have been a Catholic all my life and never knew about the O Antiphons until this year. Wow!! The Catholic Church has so much to offer it never ends!

I first encountered the O antiphons when I was a postulant in a Benedictine monastery. They are used as during vespers, which is such a lovely prayer this time of year, with the changing light of the setting sun. I have long since left the monastery (during my novitiate), but they remain dear to my heart. Thanks for posting the links.

I I’m planning to meditate on these antiphons starting Monday December 17. And, I plan to do some little activities for my own children around them.

I will be reciting the O Antiphons at home, alone with my cats. Many books of devotions for Advent carry these antiphons. I plan to briefly light the advent wreath during the prayers.
