The Old or Independent Catholic Church

I brought this to the traditional part of the forum, because I believe it will be best addressed here. Here is the issue:

There is an Independent Catholic Church in Clarksville, Tn. On their website, it states clearly that they are an Old Catholic Parish. On their sign in front of the church, it just has Catholic. I know of a few people who have attended the parish thinking that is was a Roman Catholic Church. I know the Bishop of the diocese and he is a wonderful man and loves God, but do you find it wrong that they do not let people know that they are not in communion with Rome? Should there be something done to make them publicly states that they are of the Old Catholic Church and not Rome? According to Rome, their ordinations are invalided so any Sacraments they do are also invalided as well.

They blend three different denominations into their own rite. They use the oxymoron independent Catholic as their title. Yes, I think they should be made to drop the name Catholic. But how do you do that? Religions are granted such a wide latitude that their belief that they are Catholic is all the courts need. I am sure every Baptist in the country, except a handful, wish there was some way to make Westboro drop the “Baptist” name. I don’t think it can be done.

But yes, it is wrong and dishonest for them to post they are Catholic with no disclaimer. Under the circumstances, dishonest is not their greatest problem.
 
There was a clothing store in my area which used the slogan “An educated consumer is our best customer”. Apply as necessary.

Yikes! Here is another example of “Independent Catholic Church”. Yes, they should remove the word Catholic from their title, and just stick with Independent, which clearly means “We can do whatever we want”.

They can call their Church Catholic if they want but I do believe they should have to put “Old” or “Independent” along with it to keep people from getting confused.
 
the term catholic has always been used since 110 AD to refer to those community of believers who follow the teachings of the apostles given to them by Christ. “Where the bishop is there is the catholic faith”. It is the catholic faith which is most important to continue on and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. The brand name of a particular catholic church is Roman Catholic. Another Brand name for a catholic church is Orthodox with a particular cultural or ethnic association.Another brand name is “Old Catholic”. The name catholic can be used legally and ecclesiastically by any group who follow the teachings of the apostles and Christ. The ecumenical councils of the catholic faith throughout the years who held onto the teachings of the apostles and Christ are truly catholic.
Ergo, any community (with solid apostolic teachings) may use the name catholic in its broadest context.

I have no problem with them using “catholic” but I do have a problem with them not stating which rite they belong to. It seems they are trying to draw in Roman Catholics thinking it is a Roman Catholic parish.

There is an Independent Catholic Church in the town I live in and they actually state that they are an Independent (not in Communion with Rome) Catholic Church.

Exactly! Catholic in that context is part and parcel with communion with the Holy See.

Sure, legally they can, but so could a pet shop. Ecclesiastically? Actually, this is specifically ruled out by canon law, which applies to Catholics.
 
I like the idea of a catholic pet shop. It could be called St. Francis Catholic pet shop. Good idea it may take off. I think canon law started in the middle ages and was the canon law for the Roman church. The catholic faith of the Eastern churches did not follow these canons.
