The old testament God and scary things he had done.(?)

In the old testament we see acts like…plague, slaughter, sacrifices, drought, death of first born. Some even accuse the old testament God of child abuse and genocide. Just wondering if there are answers to explain these things or if anyone can give me some resources that speak to this issue. Thx
 
I have a similar question. If Jesus is the same person of the trinity as the God of the Old Testament, why didnt God order/condone violence in the New Testament? Hebrews 13:8 says that God’s nature never changes.
