The one thing LDS and Catholic disagree on

I’ve been doing a bit of thinking and I wanted to run this idea by you all.

Catholics and LDS disagree on one major point. All other disagreements come from the central one.

We agree that Peter was given the keys of the kingdom.

We agree that he can pass those on.

The issue is who did he give therm to. All disagreements come from the differing views that come from 2 different churches claiming to have Christs authority through Peter and their official positions on the meaning of various scriptures.

Thoughts?
 
I agree. That is the big question. Was Peter able to pass on the keys of the priesthood to what became the Catholic church? Why is everything in the Catholic church so different from the origional church Jesus established. Why is there a huge difference in doctrines from the early Catholic church with that of the New Testament?
 
No, the gulf is much wider than that. The entire LDS cosmology is completely different from the orthodox (small ‘o’) Christian view, as is its notions of salvation.

Catholics and LDS disagree on many points. Perhaps the most fundamental is the nature of God. This Wikipedia article contrasts Mormon beliefs with traditional Christian beliefs.

If two groups don’t agree on the most basic aspect of who they worship, who holds the keys is irrelevant.
 
there is a vital difference in the LDS church and Christians. the LDS faith does not belive the atonement of Christ was sufficient to save people, you must therefore earn your way into one of the three degrees of heaven. this is also one of the reasons you do not see a cross or a Crucifix in the LDS church, they do not want to be reminded of such a terrible day. (this according to my then stake president in pocatello,id)

As the other people have already posted here, there is a huge difference between mainstream Christianity and the LDS. What I have heard from former LDS members who have studied this is that much of the LDS theology that differs from mainstream Christianity came after Joseph Smith gained a larger following. I find that incredibly telling. A lot of what I’ve heard about this time period suggests that Joseph Smith was implementing theology that gave him and his leaders greater and greater control over their people.

i have to challenge this. catholics believe the doctrine is the same.

I would have to agree with the last person who posted about your comment. The Catholic Church professes that it is the Church which Christ founded. I could point you to many sources, but I think the liturgy of the early Church found in the Didache is the most telling: earlychristianwritings.com/didache.html

If you read the Early Church Fathers, you would realize that you are wrong. It’s not Mormonism you’ll see, but Catholicism right from the beginning.
 
The point I’m getting at is that because of how the churches view the scriptures and the words of the church leaders we have the major differences. Ideas on the nature of God for example we have much of the same bible, but we view certain passages differently. thus creating the large differences.

The major point they disagree on is Jesus Christ. Mormons confess some sort of “divinity” but refuse to acknowlege Jesus Christ as GOD almighty.

No we recognize Christ as Jehovah we also recognize His father as a separate being.

these ideas however do come from our recognized leaders.

So is Jesus GOD?

I believe EVERYONE would agree that it is a incorrect to call yourself a Christian in any form without first confessing that Jesus Christ is God.

As far as Christ being a “separate being”, this also reflects how Mormos don’t believe in the Trinity, which is another Christian fundamental and no person can call themselve a Christian without first confessing these two basic principles.

That is polytheism, and it is not Christian - or Jewish or Muslim, for that matter. The LDS church stands alone in its theology, although it is not the only polytheistic system which recognizes Christ.
 
The LDS’s are not part of the mainstream of Christian believers and any resemblance is due to Joseph Smith’s tendency to plagerize the KJ version of the Bible. Experts have determined that the Book of Mormon is written in the style of the King James Bible in an apparent attempt to lend the BOM an air of authenticity. If you think that Joseph Smith was a prophet then head for WalMart and buy a stack of white shirts and dark ties because the LDS is where you belong. If you DON’T think he was a prophet then the whole LDS thing is a fraud and it is pointless to discuss the differences between LDS and the Church that Christ established.
LDS people live in a free country which allows them to believe what they want but their beliefs are so patently fraudulant that it boggles my mind how a rational person can cling to it and reject the Catholic Church.

Within mainstream christianity there is some confusion about the nature of christ and heavenly father. Recently at Mass a priest made a comment about heavenly father but he did not imply that heavenly father was christ.

For many christian sects, there seems to be a cult around the figure of Jesus. He seems to take on more importance than heavenly father. In fact, heavenly father can be ignored by many christian groups as Christ takes more than center stage.

In the mormon tradition both are honored. Jesus is honored but heavenly father takes center also as mormons address their prayers not to christ but to heavenly father in the name of christ. In other words, it is heavenly father that mormons have answer prayers.

I doubt you could get everyone to agree on anything.

The trinity doctrine is not supported by the Bible. While it is a common belief that does not make it right.

Oh really? Can you explain this further, please? I was under the impression that the confusion over the nature of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit had been settled for many centuries, since before the Roman Empire fell even.

A Catholic priest would not need to ‘imply’ anything because within Catholicism and all orthodox Christianity the Trinity is understood. One of the three Persons of the Trinity can be referred to with denying that the Trinity exists.
