Bernadette is one of my favorites. She had a very big heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and always had a wise word of encouragement for her sisters in religious life.

Thinkiong of Bernadette makes me eager in going to heaven because I would like to meet her as soon as possible. 🙂

I’ve been wondering for the last couple of day what a bad Catholic would have looked like to St. Bernadette. Perhaps I’m a bad Catholic.
 
That is a great question, tad!

And it was not immediately apparent to me either, much to my shame, I think.

For real saints, they see what truly matters: the salvation of souls, whether they spend eternity in Heaven or an eternity in Hell.

Bad Catholics will go to hell because of their poor moral lives that are actually very much against the Gospel. They think just because they are Catholics, their ticket has been punched, and they are on their way, it’s just a given. Also, bad Catholics endanger the salvation of other souls by the bad example they give to other souls.

I think Msgr. Pope can explain what Bernadette means far better than I, as it was he who made it clear to me what Bernadette was getting at…

Furthermore, bad Catholics are often the root of these worldly problems. What did our Lord say? “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His Righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” Physical dangers often result from people having their priorities out of whack, causing them to do both spiritual and earthly things badly. Look at the housing crash: greedy people bought houses they couldn’t afford, greedy lenders lent said buyers money they couldn’t repay, and greedy investors bought the loans from the lenders convinced they could game a profit without risk. When, predictably, borrowers defaulted en masse, the entire financial system was brought to the brink of collapse.
 
Yeah, especially so called practicing Catholics who are feminists at the same time.
 
I agree with the Carmelite priest saying most our daily masses at my parish when he says that most people he knows are basically good. I still struggle with this concept of bad Catholics. True, there are many who don’t hold the Catholic faith in it’s entirety, but I prefer to think of them as suffering from a poorly formed conscience rather than being a bad Catholic. Perhaps they are the same thing.

It’s also true that some Catholics can make the Catholic Church look really bad. Maybe these are bad Catholics. Again, I don’t know any Catholics like this in real life, in my life it’s strictly an internet phenomena, but even then, I strain at calling them bad Catholics.
