Too funny. Hey, I’m from the prairies of Oklahoma originally. We don’t want this thing either. I thought this sounded like a song from a luau when we sang it. Absent the words I can totally hear the slack key guitar playing and the grass skirts swishing because of the harmony used. I don’t usually complain about the musical choices but this is an odd song. The congregation does not like Marty Haugen’s We Are Many Parts, probably because it sounds more like a chuckwagon song sung on the prairie than a song suitable for mass.
Luckily at my parish most of the people sing no matter which mass it is and no matter the mass parts used or hymns selected. I think participation in the liturgy goes far deeper than these superficial things to the heart of the faith in the people. Since we have so many people who have been through CRHP, they participate fully no matter the distractions, poor song choices, bizarre homilies, etc.
