What do you think of this Institution?

A friend of mine, now deceased, was a member of the Orange Order and used to play the flute. He was a very good person but was strongly opposed to Catholicism; his objections were more sectarian than theological.

I think the Orange Order is more of a sectarian organisation than a religious group. I have heard that members are devout protestants but I feel that this group exists to promote hatred and not protestantism as a religion. Do you agree?

Note: I do not want to hear any sectarian slurs or hatred. I want to hear what you think about this institution? Is it good? Is it bad? Should it be banned? etc
 
It is dreadful…A bunch of them tried to burn down a Catholic Church in Northern Mi decades ago…Just because they hate the Catholic Church

I recall horrific marches through Catholic areas and how they burned down a house in Northern Ireland and killing at least one young child trapped in that house

So you see the order more as a hate group than as a religious fraternal organisation?

It’s stated aims are to promote biblical protestantism but in my experience, they seem to be rather unreligious in nature. That said, a friend of mine from the Shankill Road area of Belfast once told me that members were extremely devoted Christians.
 
I think along the same lines as you on this. I wish that they would just fade away naturally, as more and more people see that these lines that have been drawn in the past separate HUMANS from each other so that a few people could have power and control while the rest of us suffer.

They are about as far from a true Christian as it gets…I would ask your friend to define Christian…by their fruits ye shall know them
 
My late Irish aunt’s worst insult was to refer to someone a “bloody orangeman”.I was once called a Dogan Jew by one of their ilk and I still have no idea what it means but I’m sure it’s a perjorative for Catholic.Anti catholics by any other name…yawn.

I’m a Scot, brought up protestant, converted to Catholicism. The Orange Order have always been seen as a strange relic of the past. The whole Orange/Rangers FC/loyalist connection to the reformed churches is pretty tenuous. They have more in common with Freemasonry (including their dress, structure, membership, the use of ‘lodge’ to designate branches, etc.) than they do with the protestant churches. Though some may be churchgoers, that doesn’t make them a Christian group, not by a long shot.

William of Orange, the man they celebrate, was as much an enemy of presbyterians as he was of Catholics, ironic since most orangemen are presbyterians or free-churchmen. For all their rhetoric about protestant religious freedom, as far as I can see, the Orange order are about as superstitious and closed-minded as you can get.

I have heard that in some towns in Northern Ireland their annual Orange March has turned into something less sectarian, more of an inclusive celebration of both Irish and Ulster Scots history and culture. Still, I’m guessing that owes more to townspeople being fed up with sectarianism than it does to the Orange order.
 
I have nothing nice to say about an organization which repeatedly uses its influence and power to bully Catholics. So, its better i say nothing at all.

I definitely agree that the nature of the Orange Order is more masonic than religious. In fact, the whole organisation is basically freemasonry with distinct religious affiliation. Freemasonry accepts all religions, wereas the Orange Lodge only accepts protestants. So in a sense, you could say that the Orange Order is protestant freemasonry.

Perhaps, although I’m not sure about hate speech laws in the UK. But I think if you were to ban something like the Orange Order it would just go underground and become more poisonous. Maybe if it’s left out in the light it’ll eventually run its course or morph into something harmless. JMHO.

I think that in many ways you can draw a parallel between the Orange Order in Northern Ireland and the Ku Klux Klan in the Southern United States. Both are reactionary institutions created to give individuals a destructive outlet for their hatred. May they both die out, and soon.
