How were Satan and the other fallen angels able to choose evil over good? I always thought that anything evil comes from the devil, but in their case were did the evil come from? Is it simply the mystery of God’s ability to give us perfect free will? Thanks

Evil is a consequence of free will. In order for us to be truly be free, there had to be the possibility that we could choose self over God. The origin of evil was when the angels who fell chose self over God. For them, because of their higher intelligence and the fact that they are pure spirit, their choice was irrevocable. They can’t “change their minds” and repent.

For humans we also fell when Adam and Eve, who stood as representatives for the human race, chose self over God. However, because humans are spirits joined to bodies and exist within time where change is possible, humans could repent and be redeemed.
