“The welcome ceremony was presided over by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese, father Alberto Figueroa Morales on behalf of the Archbishop. The priests and parishioners made the profession of faith and during the liturgy commemorated the Supreme Pontiff, Francisco and metropolitan Robert.”

“I follow no leader but Christ and join in communion with none but your blessedness [Pope St. Damasus I], that is, with the Throne of Peter. I know that this is the rock on which the Church has been built.” (St. Jerome, Letters 15:2 [A.D. 396])

NOTE: it was a single parish and not the whole of Orthodoxy in Puerto Rico

I misunderstood the topic title at first, but still, I’m happy to see any church enter into communion with the Apostolic See.

What a beautiful little church they have to worship God in. I am happy for them.

Interesting. It turns out that there’s more happiness on this forum when an Orthodox parish goes Catholic than when a Catholic parish goes Orthodox.

Who would have guessed?

Glad they have come Home!!

Glory be to the Father, and to
the Son and to the Holy Spirit’
As it was in the beginning, is
Now and ever shall be, world
w/o end.
Amen.

Do entire Catholic parishes even go Orthodox? 🙂

Google “St Alexis Toth”
It’s true that we have an extensive history of (to put it very mildly) competing against each other. I’m just glad to note how much relations between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church have improved.

Is there any indication that they were a canonical Orthodox parish beforehand? Who is the Bishop were they under?

Just as Catholics resent the splitting of the Body of Christ, so do the Orthodox. Instead of triumphalism, this should be a moment of soberness about the scandalous split in Christendom, which this parish is just a glaring example, not of healing, but of the wound.

Lord, have mercy!

He was attempting to integrate Roman Catholicism to a prejudiced American Anglo-Saxon protestant culture. Introducing these new ethnic folks with their married priests and leavened bread, would have, he thought, crack the narrowly focused narrative he and his predecessors (however well intentioned) had spent decades creating. How would he explain married priests to a group he’d spent decades catechizing celibate priesthood, as a mark of Catholic exclusive grace? Also, the time spent on documents and teaching tools that were pro-Roman, yet subtly anti-Eastern would have to be changed, if not eliminated.

I’m not defending him, just presenting the perspective.

It was bound to happen. I was taught and there seems to be proof, if you go back the way the Church;s broke off, they will eventually come back together as One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church.

I know what you mean, they can go at eachother huh? And in the end over the craziest things.

Yes, that does happen. There’s even an approved western rite in Orthodoxy, though it’s controversial with some Orthodox.
I imagine its more likely for Anglican parishes to be received into Western Rite Orthodoxy.

.
I guess one thing we can all agree on is that it isn’t easy to say “I was wrong.”
