The other side of Dressing Appropriately for Mass

The subject of wearing jeans to Mass is being debated in another thread. I’d like to look at this from the other end.

Have you ever thought what someone was wearing seemed too dressy or too formal to be appropriate at Mass?

Now granted, we probably shouldn’t be quite so worried about what others are wearing but we are human.

I personally think that one’s dress might vary because of seasonal issues. That seems reasonable. The priest’s vestments are frequently more elaborate for some solemnities and Feast days. Such days probably call for ‘fancier’ clothing from the laity. People tend to dress better for Christmas and Easter than they might on other days of the year.

This seems reasonable to me.

I can’t, in my life, ever recall thinking this. The only time I really notice what others are wearing is when it’s immodest.

Although I have to say that if a lady wears a keen hat, I think,
“Ooooo I wish I had the hair for that!”

I voted that I have seen some come “too formally dressed” and yes, I feel that what you wear to a Prom or in a Wedding Party may be too formal for Mass unless of course, the Mass was for the Wedding or a pre-Prom Mass

Okay, I must admit there have been a few occasions where I’ve seen some people usually women wearing something a little over the top, something that looks like it would be more appropriate for a formal cocktail party or black tie dinner. But I don’t mind if someone is too dressed up unless it is provacative. Now there are elderly women (70ish and older) that sometimes wear fancy hats and fur shawls and compared to the shorts, jeans and t-shirt crowd these women are dressed up but put these women back in the time era they came from or perhaps a more traditional part of the country then that’s not the case, they would probably fit right in. I like it when I see people putting forth the effort for Sunday even if it’s an outfit that went out of style years ago. At least their trying.
