I agree that officially, it is optional and has no official recognition so far. But also so far nothiing that has come from it has anything contrary to existing Church doctrine, and the ‘fruits’ of the apparitions is one an increase in faith and two a great source of conversions.
There are many problems with it but we are going off thread here; I believe there are other threads from the past which discuss it and can be located by a search of both the old and current forums.

Reformed Rob:
Cardinal Ratzinger is quoted as saying in his biography. I’ll post it later.
Ok, finally got to it. A friend has the book, and it was longer than I thought it would be before I got over there.

Cartinal Ratzinger, by John L. Allen, Jr.

Ch. 6, p. 218
he quotes from Ratzinger’s book “Salt of the Earth”

“It is definitely possible for someone to receive from his religion directives that help him become a pure person, which also, if we want to use the word, help him to please God and reach salvation…This undoubtedly happens on a large scale.”

That’s just as you will find it in Allen’s biography on Card. Ratzinger. Needless to say, it’s on the topic of non-Christian religions. He’s not saying “religion” and meaning the Catholic faith, the topic of discussion is non-Catholic and particularly non-Christian religions.
