Last week our pastor invited the catechism students, who he instructs before the 11:00 a.m. Mass, to come on to the alter and pray the Our Father. They acted it out with gestures – similar to ASL but it was not ASL. They had gestures for some of the words. It was beautiful, but I cannot remember it all. Has anyone seen this? Something seemed charismatic about it.

My parish is always a surprise. If it’s not Mariachi band music, then there’s something new. I’m new to this parish.

Incidentally, they continued the Our Father with the Protestant ending that was written into the Our Father by King Henry VIII, which I thought the Vatican had retranslated and eliminated “For Thine is the Power, etc.”

Actually that doxology is as old as the apostolic era as it was found in the Didache.

It actually isn’t part of the prayer. When the Our Fatherr is finsihed the Priest says Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We then say, For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever". It is a separate thing entirely.

It is ancient and was not invented by Henry.

No, no clowns. I have a fear of clowns.

Yes, Mariachi bands for Our Lady of Guadalupe at Mass instead of the choir.

I think I’ll ask the priest tomorrow and see if the children do it again on the alter with the pastor.

It did not look like ASL; it’s the only way I could describe it. The sign for “heaven” was not the ASL sign for heaven. The gestures were different, though I’m not schooled in ASL. It’s hard to explain what I saw, so I guess no one else has experienced these gestures during the Our Father.

I know it’s not prohibited – but in all my years, and it’s been many, I never saw this. And I could not find it in any research.

I am assuming positive intent as it was beautifully done. I just wondered at the origin.

There is no such thing as a Charismatic Our Father. If the hands are lifted up in prayer, it is because that is how many people pray, not because it’s the Our Father.
